Since the beginning of photography, photos have been used to convey emotions within the viewer, and possibly even encouraging an idea or opinion. The Image, Angry scene at Sabra does just that. Capturing these raw emotions that the victims were expressing, the photographer, Bill Foley was able to freeze a traumatic moment in time, not only for future generations to view, but to show us the ugly, raw impact violence has on innocent people around the world. The photo shows a group of troubled on-lookers surrounded by destroyed buildings and rubble. The ruins show the destruction that the people in this photo are faced with. The main focus in the picture is a distraught women holding two military helmets. The helmets show that the destroyed background was an act done by military forces, and the women in the photo was greatly affected by the actions. In today’s world we are almost desensitized to violence, but seeing a real reaction to it makes the viewer sympathetic towards the women in the photo. Not only sympathy, but you can almost feel the anger radiating from her reaction, in return transferring it to the viewer. The viewer is left with the same question the seems to be written across the women’s face, how could something like this happen to innocent people? People generally feel especially bad for children. The children in the background could bring the viewer to take a look at the children in their own lives. Parents could feel emotions regarding the fact that the kids in the photo are the same age as their own, maybe even thinking about how they’d feel if their kids had to experience such a traumatic event. Not only parents, but brother, sisters, nieces and friends, the viewer comes to realize that these we’re real people whose lives were torn apart by violence, generating a range of negative
