Pan’s Labyrinth – Literature Review I. Introduction – historical background The Spanish Civil War lasted from July of 1936 till April of 1939. The intensely ferocious war was between the Republicans and the Fascist nationalists, lead by General Francisco Franco. Victory was in favor of the nationalists and General Franco ruled Spain for the next 36 years after the war, up until his death in 1975.

Introduction In a genre that has been dominated in recent years by the same cheap jump scares and unnecessary gore, Mexican director Guillermo del Toro has breathed life into horror again by combining it with elements of fantasy and historical fiction. In many of his iconic films, del Toro immerses his audience in stories where terrifying monsters are outshined by the cruelty of humans. Utilizing this aspect, he often provides a commentary on politics, in particular the subject of fascism, interwoven into his films. Examining his career, no film defines Guillermo del Toro’s proficiency as a both director and a writer more than his 2006 film Pan’s Labyrinth.
In del Torro’s Pan Labyrinth there are a lot of characters who are Orange personas, simply given the time period the movie is based in. The story is about a guerilla rebellion, and so it would make complete sense for a lot of the participants to be action-oriented, willing to take more extreme risks, and in some sense wild, because these are the kind of people who shine in times of war. The General is very Orange in nature, he can be cruel and cold but he will get the work done no matter the expense.
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of stranded boys survive on an island with no adults, soon their sense of morality falls apart and violence takes place. The loss of morality causes the boys to break the rules and become violent. Eventually, the boys become uncivilized and stop caring about their actions. They get to a point where they disregard logical thought and resort to violence without reason. As the story progresses, the absence of morality causes violence to reign among the boys.
Pan’s Labyrinth shows an interesting mix between the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and the imagination of a child that leaves viewers questioning if the imaginary world is actual part of the “real world.” Throughout these mixings of reality, observers are presented with female characters that come to show that the questioning of authority and reality seemingly results in a positive outcome. Ofelia and her mother Carmen are two opposite examples of this. Ofelia continuously disobeys those around her, and thus, she gets to live as the princess of the underworld at the end of the story. Carmen obeys all that Captain Vidal tells her, so by the end of the movie, she dies completing the captains ultimate dream of having a son.

Christmas carols are morally responsible and do the right thing. The christmas carol starts off with scrooge not being nice but then he has a change of heart eventually when the ghosts of christmas past visit him and take him through his past, his present and his future. I chose Lord Of the flies from the literature we read this year because human nature was a big theme in Lord of the flies.
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a gorgeously realised tale of fantasy and horror, set against the backdrop of post-Civil War Spain. The story follows a young girl, Ofelia, who travels to the countryside with her ill mother to live with her new stepfather, Vidal, a captain in Franco’s Fascist army. The film explores how Ofelia uses her imagination as a copying mechanism to deal with the monstrosities of her reality as well as to interpret the horrific events unfolding around her. Del Toro employs a number of cinematic devices including cinematography, sound and editing to effectively draw parallels between Ofelia’s reality and imagination, ultimately creating a powerful film that condemns the nature of Fascism.

In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins the overarching theme is being responsible is vital to survive in daily life, Katniss demonstrates this by caring for her family, being responsible for Peeta and his actions and being responsible for herself and her own actions.
The Goonies and The Hunger Games are alike and different in their stories of the hero's journey. The Ordinary World, Call to Adventure, and Mentor Helper all have a number of similarities and differences throughout their stories. The movie, Pan’s Labyrinth, created by Guillermo Del Toro, is deeply rooted with the idea of rebirth and resurrection. This concept is best illustrated through one of the monsters in the movie - the giant toad. Although there are many monsters in this movie and all do connect to the idea of rebirth, the giant toad holds the most symbolism and meaning behind it.

In the movie, 24 tributes are forced to enter a game where they kill each other in order to survive which led them to losing their identity and becoming pawns to entertain the people of the Capitol.
Responsibility is key to survival in The Hunger Games because you must be responsible and careful before making a decision that depends on your life. “The price of greatness is responsibility.” (Winston Churchill) In The Hunger Games, two tributes, one male and one female under the age of eighteen, must leave their district to go and compete in The Hunger Games. While in the games all twenty-four tributes must fight to the death to entertain their Capital city.
