In chapter one of Angel Island: Immigration Gateway to America, the authors describes to the reader how the immigration process was much more difficult for the non-whites than it was for the whites. When first getting to the immigration station on Angel Island the men and women were separated including couples, this was the standard policy. It was much easier for a first-class passenger to enter the land, all they needed was a cursory medical exam while the second-class passengers had to be loaded onto a ferry and taken to Angel Island for inspection. Simple questions were asked to immigrants arriving to help identify who they were. “But nationality, race, and immigrant and economic status all played a part in determining whether further medical
Also in evaluating an applicant; which factors are appropriate to consider? Can race be considered as a factor in the admissions process? THE COURT HELD The Supreme Court declared that University of California, Davis Medical School’s special admissions program is
In my International Relations class, we discussed the tendency for countries to overlook things that are unacceptable in their own country but allow it to take place in countries they are associated with. An example is the China-U.S. relationship in reference to labor laws for both adults and children. In my classes focusing on international relations they tend to focus on each countries treatment of the minority population in both their own countries and surrounding countries. The minority population is often subject to discrimination, lack of access, brutality, and other such actions. This book also highlights how the U.S. treated the country that was filled with what they considered minorities.
1a. The target audience for this article is United States citizens, particularly those who side with Democratic political views. I believe this because the article is about how the United States of America is responding to the Paris Attacks in regards to the admission of Syrian refugees into our country. The main focus of this piece is on the ideas some Republican leaders have shared that they believe to be the best way to handle this issue. By selectively shedding light on these chosen responses, the authors shows that he is writing to those who don’t agree with these Republicans, which is most commonly Democrats.
In the 1920’s there was a resurgence of Nativism that led to massive immigration restriction. The National Origins Act of 1924 had a goal to limit specific nationalists, ethnic, and religious groups that could enter the United States. They did so by allowing only a certain percentage come into America per year. For example, based on the number of immigrants during the Gilded Age if there were four million individuals of Anglo-Saxon descent living in the U.S., only eighty thousand, two percent, could come into
citizens for generations grew hostile towards the new arrivals. They viewed them as threats to their jobs and wages, and found the Jewish and Catholic immigrants impure when compared to the dominant Protestant religion. Overall the southern and eastern Europeans were viewed as racially inferior. The Immigration Act of 1917 laid out the lines for who would be welcomed into the country and who would be turned away, devoting an exhausting two pages-worth to describe the new criteria. Anyone suffering from mental or physical disability or illness was to be barred, including those simply deemed to be of lower intelligence.
Today’s world is rife with problems. With conflict in the Middle East, countries abroad becoming more aggressive, and protest over human rights violations taking place all over the country, America needs a strong leader to get through these times. One such leader would be Eleanor Roosevelt, the United State’s longest-serving and undoubtedly most active First Lady. Beyond her duties as the wife of the president, Eleanor Roosevelt took part in many movements and was one of the most unabashed spokespersons on issues of her time. Taking sometimes controversial stances on matters such as civil rights, welfare, global issues, Eleanor deviated from some of the more common view of her contemporaries; but in spite this, she was still one of the most
Why consider opposing viewpoints? "The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject, is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion, and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind." - John Stuart Mill, British philosopher. The book Immigration Opposing Viewpoints discusses the Historical Debate: should immigration be restricted? Is immigration a problem for the U.S.?
Moreover, another example that made immigrants trying to get into America a harder time was the National Origins Act was passed in 1924, which restricted even more immigrants from coming and essentially excluded Asians. This was a major setback amongst those who were able to come and created an even larger idea of nativism. Another thing that restricted immigrants from coming to the US was the literacy tests used. The literacy test set back many immigrants from coming to the US because immigrants needed to be able to read and write English to pass it and not all immigrants were able to do
I am writing to you today on the behalf of my 8th grade literacy class, because I would like to tell you want my views are on refugees from middle east countries. I personally feel that we should let these refugees into the United States of America. This is because they are innocent people caught in the middle of a civil war. However, people are still making untrue claims and assumptions against these people just because they were born in the middle east. Some statement you might hear is that since these people are Muslim they are terrorist, but in their religion, Islam they practice peace and helping others.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants, from around the world come into the United States. These immigrants come to America for better life, some immigrants are refugees, escaping persecution and civil wars in their home country. Many immigrants believe that United States is the best place to go. I think allowing Immigrates to United States can benefit America because allowing Immigrates to come to America would have an increase on Economy and illegal immigrants already pay taxes and America is the country of immigrants. I think Immigrants should be allowed to come to America because allowing immigrants to come to America would have an increased on economy.
For many new immigrants coming to America, it is difficult to adjust into the new society. Many come to America without the basic knowledge of English, the new immigrants do not have the ability assimilate to American society because of the lack of possible communication between the immigrant and an native. Non-English speaking immigrants that come to America face harsh challenges when trying to assimilate to U.S. society because immigrants are often segregated into ethnic communities away from natives, Americans do not know basics of words of other well known languages, and the lack of government funding education programs. Assimilation into a new society is difficult enough, but when the society pushes any new immigrants to separate part
In addition, these boundaries include, but are not limited to, implement a civilities ethical beliefs, uphold peoples individual rights, support members of the country’s political power, and finally punish people
America is only for Americans! This sentiment has been heard many times especially in this past election cycle. In the south, people often express their discontent with illegal immigrants. In fact, people all over the country debate whether the country should accept “aliens”. This debate over the years has caused several different laws to decrease the flow of illegal immigrants into the country.
My final reason is “Within the past two years, Arizona, Utah, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, and Alabama have all passed tough immigration laws. These laws seek to identify illegal immigrants and deport them.” (Bubar). They shouldn’t just enter without permission because if they have kids that were born in the United States, the parents that are illegal immigrants would get separated from their kids if they were to get
