Out With the Old, in With the New In March of 1938 Vogue says, “It is no longer smart to be so boyish. You must be the essence of romance at evening.” As the Depression has gone by many people have turned to the feeling of a loss of hope or depression itself. Turning to new styles of fashion helped people cope with the fact that things were changing in their lives, women had to take over the role of working while the men had to go to war. Men came back wanting their jobs back when the women were not even wanting to give up that extra money they were working for themselves. They were also being expected to have this certain look of shape for their body figure, tall and slender with a small waist. The men also changed their style especially coming back after the war, they had new jackets trending that were long and v-necked. Overall, because of the Great Depression in the 1930s, there were many new styles in women's and men's clothing. First, there was a start to a new beginning of the 1930s with the new style of how women, especially, started showing more skin and showing off their curves. They started to realize they wanted to change from being boyish to being more romantic. Fashion in the 1930s is great to know about because you are able to understand the ways women and men resolved their feelings from the Great Depression. Women began to wear accessories with their outfits pulling the outfits together, such as hats or belts. Women also had a certain way they were supposed to look, they were curvy and willing to show it off with high waisted pants and backless dresses. Men were changing the way they clothed themselves too, they would wear baggy pants and long v-necked jackets! It is a great idea to care about fashion from the 1930s because people are able to understand how much things have changed due to other’s feelings and how fashion has kind of been there for them to go to in the worst or toughest times. Maybe sometime in the future fashion could be what we lean on in time of despair just like people did in the 1930s. It might not be soon but who would truly know if there was another Great Depression coming, or maybe something slightly worse?
