There are multiple reasons why schools should continue to assign homework to students. Often, people think homework encourages responsibility and higher academic achievement for students. Others frequently think homework allows parents and teachers to see the progress of each individual student.
Pro Point 1 - Brenna
Homework encourages responsibility and higher academic achievement. It gives the students a better understanding of the content in which they are learning, leading them to get more out of school. According to Luke (2015), ¨There is an opportunity to take more responsibility for your learning. It creates space for investigating things of great personal interest¨ (p. 1). According to Schwartz (2015), ¨Homework is a way for teachers to see where their students are at academically, what they understand and what they don't understand¨ (p. 1). Homework is an excellent way for teachers to observe what their students do and do not know. When bringing homework home, students are challenged to do the work on their own and figure out a way of learning that works for them. The following day, teachers are able to see if the student fully understands the assignment; if they do not, then the teacher is able to review it in class. We were able to see what he understood and what he was having difficulties with (Schwartz, 2015, p. 1). By giving students independence on homework, it allows teacher to see what the student has obtained from their lesson the previous day in class. Homework also extends learning outside of the classroom, and is proven to help students learn quicker. When doing homework after school, the students brain is reminded if what they learned during class that day. Homework also gives parents an insight on how their child is doing and gives them a deeper understanding of their struggles. Gazette (2015) stated, ¨It gave us an opportunity to say, ´OK, what got in the way of you getting this done at school?¨ (p. 1). Parents are able to see what their child is struggling with and have the chance to give them guidance. If it was not for homework, parents would be unable to interact with their child about schoolwork. ¨It serves as a good way for parents to observe their children's progress and to teach young people that learning doesn't happen only inside a classroom¨ (Spencer, 2017, p. 3). Parents should be involved in their child's life and interested in their education. Homework allows a parent to gradually see the progress of their child's learning. Also, having homework outside
