The book by Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle, tells about the hardships that Jeannette went through for the first part of her life. Jeannette’s father was unable to hold a steady job and this forced her family to move very often. Jeannette lived in many places and was often homeless as a child. While moving to those places, most specifically in West Virginia, Jeannette faced the problem of trying to make new friends while also being bullied. She also had the struggle of not knowing where her life would take her next or if they would stay in one place forever.
Life changing experiences have a good or a bad effect on peoples lives and are often quite challenging. This idea was explored in the fiction stories Hatchet by Gary Paulson, Dragon Wings by Lawrence yep, and Eleven by Sandra Cisneros. Brian from Hatchet, Moon shadow from Dragon Wings, and Rachel from Eleven all faced life changing experiences that have a big effect on their lives. Brian faced loneliness and hunger when he was stranded in the middle of the forest. Many things made Brian lonely including the fact that he had to spend many nights alone and hoped “they would probably come today.”
We finally got to Winston-Salem after 2 hours of a long drive. When we pulled up to our new home it was bigger then the last one, I was happy that I moved to Winston, but the only thing was that I didn 't want to go to my new school because I knew no one there and it was going to be very awkward, but when I went the next day it wasn 't that bad, I made new friends so, I wasn 't so lonely. My mom went to work while I was at school. She said that she was glad that she took this job and she doesn 't regret it at all and I was really happy for her.
The only place that I have ever resided in was Miami, Florida so moving meant that I had to go to new schools and meet make new friends. Surprisingly, I made friends with people within the first two weeks and they are still my close friends going on three years. Despite having made friends, there was always a void in my heart. At school, I would sit in class wishing that my father was still alive or that I was still living in Miami.
In the spring of 2012, I was informed that we were going to move. As a thirteen going on fourteen year old, the news was rather jarring. I was born and raised in that house, in that town, it was all I knew. We packed up our belongings and began the 678 mile journey to our new “home.” Moving from Hartland, Michigan to Durham, North Carolina was not only immense in distance, but in way of life.
One of the most difficult things I have ever experienced is moving to Idaho before my junior year of high school from Utah. Despite this being a common occurrence for people it was hard for me because it uprooted me from the community I had lived in for the past seven years, and the people I loved. It caused me to leave friends that I grew up with and that I couldn’t imagine leaving. And forced me to meet new friends and discover a new place. As I have had time to reflect on my experiences it causes me to realize that it doesn’t matter where you are, or the people you know, but how you react in the situation.
When we had to move from D.C., after I just started to fit in, was next. The feeling was indescribable, but still nothing compared to the first. Moving is probably one of the biggest impacts on peoples life. It makes them leave literally everything behind.
It was so hard moving because I felt like I was leaving all of my friends behind. Maybe my old friends have moved on
The winter before my 12th birthday, my parents decided that moving to Florida was a good idea, and although it 's a lovely state for tourism, Florida wasn 't the best place for a new start for us. My dad 's side of the family has lived in Pennsylvania for generations, so the move seemed to be a fresh start and an opportunity to settle down for good with nothing from the past interfering. Florida was supposedly cheaper, more child-friendly, and the perfect place for people to redeem themselves. Unfortunately, none of these tales held any truth because when we finally found an apartment, it was overpriced, dangerous, and filled with many others with the same idea as us.
In life, many events or situations influence the way one feels or the decisions one makes. Basically, one goes through certain events in life that have such a provocative and stimulating impact they totally change the life of an individual. For me, the life-changing event happened when I moved to America for almost 3 years. However, moving to America was a life-changing moment for me because of cultural differences, religious differences, and having no friends.
This created a great rift between me and the people that had been my friends. I began trying to hang out with friends but found they were always busy while I was home reading, waiting for an adventure. I had managed to keep a few of my friends and these people are still my friends today, but first I had to deal with being solitary for a while. After I accepted the way school, and friends were going to go I only faced one obstacle. Almost my entire life changed after my move, I had a new routine, some new friends, and a new way I had to learn.
I went through a phase where I was very closed off to everything and unwilling to try new things. Three years after this original move, I moved from Phoenix to Columbus, Ohio. Right before this move, I was beginning to come out of my shell and return to the original person I had been for the fourteen
To answer your questions- I feel like you did a good job relaying the emotional trauma and mixed emotions that one experiences through an unsettling move after years of stability and familiarity. The part in your essay where you said, “Loss hurts, just like when your dog dies,” really conveyed the point of hurt and loss one feels as they’re forced into change. I thought the part where you talked about meeting your wife as a positive of the move was huge to me as the reader. That was one of the biggest points that stuck out to me. Meeting your soul mate after a scary and stressful change in your life points to divine alignment, and/or a blessing in disguise, and as you said in your essay “through this event, your life will grow in meaning and
Although not every move was easy, I soon started enjoying it and looked forward to learning something new about a different place. Therefore, when my father informed me that we were going to relocate to USA, I was on top of the moon. I looked forward to a new environment and new experiences. Despite all the different moves, I found my relocation to Maryland one of the hardest. I soon realized that the schooling was very different and people even talked differently.
Bumping into people while looking down and asking multiple people for direction even though I was shy. Giving five minutes after each class to get to the other, walking into a classroom on my first day people staring and observing. Moving to a different town is not about the new house, it is about adapting to a new environment. Moving away from family and friends can be a tough thing to do. I had to adjust to leaving my friends and family that I loved and seen almost every day.
