“60% of all human communication is nonverbal body language; 30% is your tone, so that means 90% of what you’re saying ain’t coming out of your mouth” (Alex “Hitch” Hitchens). Many people believe that it is just a kind of saying aiming at intensifying the importance of nonverbal communication. However, a recent study (*) demonstrates their viewpoint are wrong. According to the figure, nonverbal factor plays a decisive role, contributing to 93% in the success of a speech. The fact may take many people by surprise; therefore, this essay will illustrate nonverbal communication’s contribution in presentation by giving specific examples to clarify it.
Nonverbal communication in a speech is a combination of facial expression, tone of voice, eye contact, posture and gesture, and appearance. In this essay, I will focus on four main factors: facial expression, tone of voice, eye contact, posture and gesture. To make them easy to image: if words are considered as gifts, nonverbal communication is like the way those gifts are given. The value of a gift is not as vital as what it reminds the receiver of the sender’s love. Similarly, conveying ideas and feelings through gestural communication can either flatter the presenter’s message if it is used properly or deteriorate what are talked when it is used in the wrong way.
