Nonverbal communication is something we see in everyday life and experience all around us. Most of us are familiar and comfortable with this form of communication. Even so it remains a complex and dynamic field of communication. We communicate 75-90% using nonverbal communication (Chaudhry & Arif, 2012). It can be said that the real meaning of spoken words is only communicated via nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication can be broadly defined as anything that can be used other than words to communicate. These include Para language, kinesics, proxemics, haptics. This article will focus briefly on few of these dynamic and complex aspects of nonverbal communication and its role in interpersonal communication.

They can be used to the advantage of the speaker. For example studies have shown how these cues can be used to increase the affectivity and persuasion value of a message (Cesario, 2008). At the same time knowing your audience in any form of communication is important and helpful. But Nonverbal communication helps the speaker establish a unique link with its audience. This can be very helpful in situations where a lot must be said in a short span of time. Within the interpersonal framework one thing that needs to be understood is just as much a unique links can be built, unique links exist within communities and cultures. The new IT age has made a huge impact on the world. In the traditional understanding of nonverbal communication it’s hard to see how nonverbal communication makes an impact in this virtual world. The importance of nonverbal communication is such that we have needed to extend nonverbal communication beyond the physical world. This can be seen in many of the Instant messaging apps (Ganster, Eimler, & Krämer, 2012) (Lo, 2008).
