The next thing the FMLA discusses is which employees qualify to take a covered leave. The first thing is they must work for a covered entity. The guidelines that must be met is that they have been with there employer for 1 year, and have worked at least 1,250 hours in the previous year before the employee has requested this type of time off.

It has always been difficult for people in this industry to have a family because of the intense and long hours that need to be fulfilled, this act at least allows employees to take the time they need at the beginning of starting a family. I also believe that this act will evolve more to make these leaves paid, so that families do not struggle while they are on their leave. Some families do begin to struggle while one parent takes a leave since its unpaid, but it the industry wants to continue to give back to their employees to make sure their turnover rates begin to drop, making the leave paid would be one of the next steps. I truly feel like if this step is made, many of the head chefs and pastry chefs will not move around so much from different businesses because they know their current employer will fully take care of
The Family and Medical Leave Act The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 allows employees who are eligible to take an unpaid leave of absence up to 12 weeks each year from a covered employer for medical conditions that prevent them from performing their job duties or to care for a family member with a health condition (FMLA, n.d.). FMLA allows for prenatal complications, the birth of a child and the adoption or fostering of a child. For an employee to be eligible they must work for the employer at least 12 months and have at least 1,250 hours of work during that previous time (FMLA, n.d.). A private sector employer that employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles of the worksite is a covered employer (FMLA, n.d.).

The main argument made by Jessica Shortall in her talk “The US needs paid family leave -- for the sake of its future” is that newborns are important to the economy. More Specifically, Shortall argues that women should have longer paid period of maternity, therefore they can properly take care of the future generation. The United State is one for the few countries that does not provide paid leave nation wide, but states like California, New Jersey, and Rhode do. Although, with the presidential debates various candidates are ready to make a policy in which everyone is allowed paid family leave. Hillary Clinton wants to fund it by making the wealthy pay for it. Rubio said he will give a 25 tax credit to business providing them with at least four weeks.
United States has always been the country that grow up celebrating ourselves as the world’s most powerful nation, the world’s richest nation, the world’s freest and most blessed nation. But in some ways we are not the best in the world like, 70th in health, 69th in ecosystem sustainability, 39th in basic education. In my opinion, we should be worried, because given our reputation this is not us, we were top of everything. People are paid time off for reasons less important than having a baby. Most parents fear the first day they have to leave their baby in a new child care facility. Sometimes the unpaid time that most people take affects their family because everyone struggles when a paycheck is not coming in. The cost of raising a new baby buying diapers, clothes, formula, and medical bills all adds up when there is no income coming in. Some of the recourses I plan to use to back take on the argument are the websites and periodicals, I will research and gather data that supports statistics that show the states that have enforced paid maternity leave in the work place have higher employment return.
The Negative Impacts of Absent Fathers In a household the role of men is quite simple: most men are the breadwinners in their home, they discipline their children and they provide protection and safety. As it is, men are known to build a stable foundation in the home and to provide all the necessary nurturing it needs. On the other hand, with the absence of a father brings forth a different idea of how the home is likely to operate. Bringing a new baby into the world is a life changing experience. The lives of both parents are changing tremendously as they begin to learn to raise an infant by trial and error. Now imagine being two gay dads who have just adopted a beautiful child, but have to return to work and are not allowed to spend any time with them. Now imagine being the adopted child and coming into a new home and not getting a chance to even be with their new parents, it would be terrifying. Having a baby can be exciting and scary, so if the responsibilities are shared among the parents and they spend more time with the infant or adopted child, both will see that they have less duties to take on.
