The Importance Of Relationships In Career And Technical Education

Relationships are the most important part of my job as an educator. I believe, with all of my heart, that when I have built a relationship with a student, no matter their age or socio economic status, they will learn more from me and work harder for me. I care about what is happening at home; I want to know if they are getting enough to eat, and if there is a safe place for them to sleep at night. I want to know if they are fighting with their parents or friends, because that is what is important in the life of a teenager. I want them to know that if there is anything they need from me, that I will be there for them and I will work with them to make their situations better. As an educator in Career and Technical Education, primarily in Business and Life Skills, I have the responsibility and honor to help students gain the skills that will enable them to be successful when it comes to life in the real world. Relationships are key to their success, whether it be in their professional life or in their personal life. I have done my job successfully if I have modeled what good, healthy relationships should look like and if they carry that with them as they leave my class. I believe my curriculum is hugely important and that the classes I teach serve a purpose. Career and Tech Ed has a place in the education of all students. Whether they are bound for a 4-year university, a 2-year community college or straight into the working world, I have the opportunity to prepare them to meet any of those areas with success.
