Benjamin Banneker once said “Were there no uniforms, there would probably be no armies.” Not only does a soldier without a uniform look silly, but it would also be very difficult to show unification and harmony in a group whose members don’t make the effort to wear the same attire. The same applies to an educational facility, especially a school. This is one of many reasons why students should wear uniforms. Students wear their uniforms to show unity and agreement between them, uniforms improve safety, and they are overall more professional.
Bullying is an issue that can be easily resolved by uniting students. When students all dress in the same clothes, judging the price and popularity of wearing certain brands becomes less and less. From a 2013 survey conducted by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), schools that have implemented a uniform policy have had an 86% decrease in peer pressure and a 64% decrease on bullying. Additionally, unity enhances school pride. The feeling of every student wearing the same logo on their clothes makes community spirit and pride soar! The Head of the Center for Research on Aggression at Syracuse University, Arnold Goldstein, PhD, says that uniforms help distressed students feel that they are supported by the school and community: “There is a sense of belonging.” And finally, unity between students promotes altruism, which is basically self-sacrifice for the common good.
