Alexander the Great’s famous quote “I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion,” exemplifies that strong leadership is essential throughout life. It takes many traits to become a strong leader such as having talents and strengths, and being able to have good perception and bias about your subordinates. You should never waste time and give up an opportunity to improve. When I got to the Naval Academy, this mentality has been in my head constantly. I have tried to use every opportunity offered to me to improve myself. By the time you are 18 years old, you have a very good grasp on what your strengths and weaknesses are. My weaknesses are time management and strength training. I have been able to become very good at time management since I have been at the Naval Academy. Through plebe summer, if you did not work quickly then you would not get your task done and would be screamed at, which helped speed up the learning process. Now, I must manage my time so that I am able to study for a longer period of time. Since I have become efficient with managing my time, I have been able to not feel pressured to get work done on time. I have also been working on my strength and have gained fifteen pounds and now able to work out with a lot heavier weights. I am hoping that I can continue this trend and be really strong by the time I go to the fleet in four years. My talents are being able to analyze situations effectively, lead others, and do well in math and science courses. I used my talent in math and science and molded it into a strength with the knowledge I obtained in my years in school. If you want to become a good leader you need to recognize your own talents, transform them into strengths, and recognize the strengths of your people and place them in areas where they are the most effective. To be a good leader you must have many tools in your leadership toolbox. You need to learn everything you can and be comfortable using them. Leaders are able to make quick assessments of their unit through perception and bias, but know where the limit is, and understand the talents and strengths of themselves and
