Susan G. Komen (SGK) is one of the most influential non-profit organizations in terms of its effort in championing their cause. We have been given the task to help rebuild their image, and offer our recommendations on how to regain public trust and support. After the defunding of Planned Parenthood (PP) and its mismanagement of dissemination of information and response, the question that strikes us was why Planned Parenthood responded to the news and actions of SGK negatively. Despite the fact that it is true, that PP was under federal investigation for mismanagement of funds. Based on the knowledge we gain from analyzing scholarly article, video recommendations and records of communication between SGK, PP and the public, our group propose

Through this program I hope to learn the fundamentals of community based research, how to advocate for health policy, a most importantly how to educate communities on health. I believe that is the most rewarding thing I can get out of this program. Having the ability, the power, to change someone’s life, by just giving him or her basic health care knowledge is so empowering. Knowing that I changed that life, that because of me hopefully their health will better instead of worsen. Through this program I hope to learn from the community, to learn their experiences, which will allow me to be even more conscious of the disparities they are forced to face, hence causing me to ponder “how can this issue be fixed?”, “what policy can be implemented”?.
Being a student at Frostburg State University has allowed me to participate in a number of student organizations as well as leader positions and experiences. As a current mentor in the Read to Succeed program, which is geared towards helping young local students understand and develop fundamental reading and math skills, I have learned the depth and importance associated with maintaining an active role in the community. Such an experience has also helped me to enhance my own leadership skills as the current president of the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC). This student organization partners with the university’s health center, Brady Health Center, in providing and promoting health to students and members of the community. As president, I not only work side by side with the diligent members of the organization in advocating healthy lifestyle choices to students, but

Sugar can contribute to a lot of unnecessary weight gain, lethargy, and illnesses such as diabetes. Those were not the kind of problems I needed in life. I researched the sugar detox. A quick internet search told me that I had my work cut out for me. Not only would I have to get rid of my snacks, I’d also have to give up on my pastas and wine.
At a time of uncertainty and volatility, I stepped up and decided to lead when no one else was able to. Our chapter’s motto is “noblesse oblige”- the idea that those who have been provided insight and opportunity must give back for the good of the community. All members of NHS had worked assiduously to achieve and maintain a position of respect and recognition. Now it was time for us to help others arrive at a similar position for themselves. Through mentoring, tutoring, and volunteering, we can help those who may not possess the same skills as we do, to attain their own ambitions.

I am passionate about helping other people. Any person with a passion wants to spend as much time as possible doing it because it is something they love, however not everyone has the chance to do so. I feel blessed to say that I had the opportunity to contribute to my passion during this gap year by working as a volunteer in a children’s hospital in Moscow. I worked with children of all ages - from 1 to 14 years, with various diseases and causes for their hospital stay. The diseases vary; some are very serious, even deadly, while other children come to the hospital just for a general check up.
