In 1947, a contest to design a structure that represented the western expansion of America was created by the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Association. The winner of the contest was architect Eero Saarinen, who designed a stainless steel arch that is now known as the Gateway Arch. The arch is located in St. Louis, Missouri and is 60 feet tall and was completed in 1965. (US National Park Services) Like many national landmarks, the arch is a symbol of our country and its growth. It is important that public money is used to keep this structure standing because it is a reminder of our history and brings visitors to the city which helps to keep people employed.
