Inextricably bound to the authority of scripture, from the Catholic and Orthodox perspective, is the authority of the Church as the custodian of scripture, the sacred deposit of faith and the repository of apostles’ teachings. Without doubt, Christ is the head of the Church and his Spirit guides them as his final words to disciples tell: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Apostolic Succession: The ministry of the Church is held to be derived from the apostles, and of the apostles from Christ, by a continuous succession, known as ‘apostolic succession’, which is maintained by a series of bishops. Through their consecration to the episcopal office they inherit from the apostles the Holy Spirit which empowers them for the performance of their work. The idea of apostolic succession, though rejected by Protestants, was strongly emphasized by Clement of Rome before the end of the first century.
Magisterium: The organizational structure of Roman Catholic Church is ‘episcopal’- a Greek-origin word, meaning ‘overseeing’. Roman Church’s hierarchy includes the Pope as the Supreme Pontiff, assisted by the Sacred College of Cardinals, who in turn oversee archbishops, bishops, and priests.
