André Cailloux’s last name is pronounced like the old show the kids used to watch: Caillou. He was a black businessman, which is impressive in its own sense, and he was also a captain in the civil war. Cailloux was born in 1825, but the exact date is not known. However, his birthday is celebrated on February 28th.
Entry 1: The Pursuit of a Personal Legend Santiago, a young shepherd spent his life herding his sheep across field of Spain. When Santiago wakes up from his recurring dream of a treasure in Egypt, he seeks for mentors like Melchizedek, who helps him realize that the dream is his Personal Legend. A Personal Legend is something that one has always wanted to accomplish and one’s purpose in life. Melchizedek tells Santiago “when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it” (22).
Anthony Doerr used a series of literary techniques to highlight the character traits of Daniel LeBlanc–Marie’s father. He works as a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Through his speech and actions, Doerr proficiently displays his devotion and protection for his daughter and how he would always be there for her. Through his use of symbolism, sensory imagery, and indirect characterization, Doerr pictures both Daniel's caring mannerisms for Marie and his creativity as integral parts of his character.
Beliefs are usually created during the path through childhood, ultimately impacting one’s viewpoints. Natalie Zemon Davis, a Princeton University history professor, writes a detailed exploration of peasant identity through the novel The Return of Martin Guerre. Her goal is to create a descriptive picture of Artigat, a southern French town in 1550, which ultimately shapes the character’s sentiments. This novel is a reenactment of the well-known case of identity theft involving Martin Guerre, a man absent from Artigat for the past eight years. Martin’s imposter, Arnaud du Tilh, assumes the role of a husband, ultimately becoming an heir to the estate.

Hugo was confused, scared, and couldn’t bring himself to control his emotions. Thankfully, the Ha-neul clan had come to his aid before it was too late. The tiger had left him traumatized, however, along with a deep wound on his right shoulder.

Many of Marie De France’s pieces show great romances and hardships, and a battle of power mixed with stereotypical male and female relations of this time. Power has a vital part in how it affects the characters within the text and the audience that reads it. Specifically, Marie De France’s “Chevrefoil (The Honeysuckle)” where power is one of the main social constructions, working along with gender to follow the story of Tristan and the king’s wife being powerless against the king. Gender roles of this time period were important in how power was addressed as men typically had power over women, but also of those younger than themselves. “Chevrefoil” has a lot of power struggles where the wife wishes to be with a younger man whom she loves, however,
Santiago is a young boy who yearns for adventure and purpose in his life.from a young age he knows he wants to see the world and becomes a shepherd to experience new places. Santiago still struggles to find meaning and purpose throughout his many years of travel though. It's not until he goes on the journey to follow his personal legend that he truly develops as a character. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, challenges readers to acknowledge their self-worth and realize they are strongest when they love themselves.
Paulo Coelho, the author of The Alchemist tells the story of Santiago a Shepard whose life changes once he finds out about a treasure from his frequent dreams and meets a strange man who helps him to start his personal legend. On Santiago’s journey he starts to see the hidden meanings behind daily life creating the thesis that through seeing and understanding symbols behind the world people can learn about their own personal legend and live life to the fullest. Santiago’s life starts out all about his sheep, he chose to be a shepherd, so he could travel and meet new people. Santiago’s job is to take care of the sheep, but the sheep have more meaning in the story. The sheep represent how he is comfortable in his life and how he is questioning his frequent dream, to sacrifice his comfortable life to find this treasure or to continue without taking the risk.

“The Story of an Hour” is written by Kate Chopin. The main character in this story is Louise Mallard, a married woman in the 19th century who has a heart defect, she receives news that her husband died in an accident. After hearing the news of her husband she goes into solitude into her room where she finds herself not has sad about her husband but feeling some relief that she can live her own life and gains a new sense of freedom that she will have in the later days to come. This is where the theme of freedom comes in, this is seen using many literary elements throughout the story some of these would be foreshadowing, irony, and symbols to show Mrs. Mallard new- found freedom from her “late” husband.
It is a story with a long and intricate plot, of the heroic life of a simple and good man in the person of Jean Valjean. He is a very memorable character who is morally upright but guilty of certain thefts for which he feels remorse. To avoid capture and life sentence, he assumes the identity of Monsieur Madeliene, soon becoming the mayor of the small town he has adopted. It is a very beautiful story packed with excitement.
