MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--Despite having a four-run lead after seven innings, the West Virginia University baseball team lost to No. 3 TCU 8-6 in front of a record 3.415 fans at Monongalia County Ballpark on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers (20-13, 7-4 Big 12) scored six runs in each of the first four innings on 10 hits. The Horned Frogs (28-6, 9-2 Big 12) rallied with a run in the sixth and five runs in the eighth inning. Michael Grove had another strong outing, tossing seven innings.
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is both a play and a story. There are many differences between the two, but they have many similarities as well. They are both the same and different. The play 's main difference is that it didn 't have the story within the story.
The narrator in The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County does very little storytelling. He introduces us to Simon Wheeler by a barroom stove in an old tavern; then we spend the next three full pages listening to him (Twain 662-665). The narrator interrupts Wheeler and he ends our story (Twain 666). In The Outcasts of Poker Flat the narrator is outside the story and we do not know who it is. The narrator follows John Oakhurst from the beginning when he becomes an outcast (Harte 674) to the end when he dies (Harte 684).
For example, there are antagonists in both of the stories. But there are many more similarities than that. Similarities In the story “Three Billy Goats Gruff” there are two different countries telling the story. One is Norway, and the other country is Poland/Germany.
A theme that would represent Jim would be racism/slavery. “Well, I reckon! There’s two hundred dollars reward on him. It’s like picking up money out’n the road.” (Twain, 246).
The narrator's are similar and different in many ways. Both narrators learns a lesson about being proud of their culture, but the lessons came from different people in their lives so, that affected them in different ways and what they took away from the lesson. Authors of classic American literature often utilize a character’s development to establish a worldview or opinion. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby, Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald use their narrators, Huck Finn and Nick Carraway, to suggest an argument about American society. Seeking adventure, both characters embark on a journey, but their encounters with society leave them appalled. While they each have personal motives for abandoning their past, both end up interacting with different cultures that lead them to a similar decision about society and their futures. Ultimately, they stray from the dominant culture in order to escape the influence of society.

One big similarity is foreshadowing. This took place in both articles, for, “Charles,” an example of foreshadowing is when he had to think who misbehaved and said than finally said, “Charles.” An example of foreshadowing in, “The Lottery,” is when Old Man Warner says, “ Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.” This can indicate that the people of the village are sacrificing a human, which they are.
The use of language in writing is a form of self-expression and is a way to reveal key things about narrators’ characters. The narrators in “The Notorious Jumping Frog” and “Baker's Bluejay Yarn” by Mark Twain, have a very specific style of language which reveals things about their characters. In “The Notorious Jumping Frog” the narrator’s name is Simon Wheeler, The story takes place in Calaveras County, a mining town in California. Wheeler is originally asked about a man by the name Leonidas W. Smiley, but Wheeler started talking a completely different man by the name of Jim Smiley, a man with a gambling problem, who once lived in town. In “Baker's Bluejay Yarn” the narrator's name is Jim Baker.
Twain uses repetition and irony in his short story, “The Cannibalism in the Cars,” to emphasize certain parts of the story and ridicule the government to add to the humor. This helps create the refined wit Twain is known for and believes is the best way to tell a story. The repetition and irony create a humorous effect in the story that is subtle, rather than blunt like in a witty or comedic
Although both of these stories have many literary elements in the story, the three that are the most important are setting, irony, characterization.
“The Lottery” is a short story by Shirley Jackson. The story commences with a vivid description of the summer day in the town, giving us the idea that the day will be good. When the lottery begins, families begin to draw slips of paper from the black box. Finally, when Bill Hutchinson withdrew the slip of paper with the black dot, his wife Tessie starts yelling that it wasn 't fair. When the second drawing was held only among the Hutchinson’s family, Tessie gets the same piece of paper with the dot and is stoned to death.
Dramatic irony is usually an over the top, tragic form of irony. Both Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” are great examples of an ironic situation. Every expresses the common theme in their own way. Although both of these literally pieces provide us with the theme of irony, Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" gives the reader a sense of suspense with the irony that proves to be more effective. Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" emphasizes on how a man’s thoughts and perception can affect oneself and other’s lives.
Introduction Plato, a famous Greek philosopher wrote the Allegory of the Cave. He tried to answer some of the profound questions which arose about the nature of reality. He tells the story of 'Allegory of the Cave' as a conversation between his mentor, Socrates (Plato’s mentor), who inspired many of Plato's philosophical theories, and one of Socrates' students, Glaucon (Plato’s older brother). He uses an allegory as a short informative story, to illustrate 'forms' and the 'cave,' in his main work, The Republic (which first appeared around 380 BC). It is one of the most perceptive attempts to explain the nature of reality.
