Clyde Tombaugh Clyde Tombaugh was a major contributor in the field of astronomy. Born in Streator, Illinois, on February 4, 1906, His family moved to Burdett, Kansas in 1922. A hail storm ruined the farm’s crops, while also ruining Tombaugh’s chances of going to college at young age. His interest in astronomy started when an uncle showed him the night sky through a telescopes. He built telescopes by himself starting in 1926, after he graduated from high school.
William Herschel Discovered Uranus William Herschel was born in 1738 and was known as a musician; he taught, composed, and performed music. However, he became interested in astronomy and began viewing the stars through a telescope that he had borrowed. Later, he began designing his own telescopes which enabled him to view objects at a greater distance. Instead of randomly studying the sky at night, he worked methodically across the entire sky and carefully wrote down his observations.

He continued to work at Lowell Observatory during the summers and after graduation he returned to work at the Observatory full-time. In 1938, he received his master 's degree from the University of Kansas. During his years at Lowell Observatory, Tombaugh discovered hundreds of new variable stars, hundreds of new asteroids and two comets.
