The Importance of Fairness in Society Everyone deserves a fair chance to share their ideas and express themselves, but this is not always the case. A fair society is one where everyone has the same opportunities and rights. The novel Lord of the Flies, by Willaim Golding, is about a group of boys forced out of society, and need to survive with one another, until they are rescued, all using their ideas to survive. The Bill of Rights is a set of rights, in the United States of America, that give citizens of America the rights that they are allowed to use to express how they feel. Because everyone has different opinions and ideas, everyone should have the right to share their thoughts because all humans deserve the freedom of speech. Golding's novel Lord of the Flies is based on the outside world of world war 2. Surrounding a group of boys stranded on an island with no adults. As seen in the discussion below two of the boys from the stranded island Piggy and Jack are having a conversation where it involves ableism and taking someone's right to speech. According to William Golding ”You are talking too much,” said Jack Merrdew ”Shut up fatty”. “ I got the conch, “said Piggy in a hurt voice, “I got the right to speak” (Golding 23, 54). In addition to William Golding the US Bill of rights first amendment also states “Freedom of speech” (US Const. Amend 1). Jack is not letting Piggy speak and taking his right of speech. Every time Piggy speaks, Jack stops him and interrupts him while the 1st Amendment says that everyone has the freedom of speech and can share their ideas however they want. Freedom of speech allows people to express themselves without being in fear. Freedom of speech also helps people to learn more about one another when they are sharing their thoughts. A fair society needs these key elements, equal opportunity, social justice and human rights. But some challenges can prevent a fair society like discrimination and inequality. To prevent these challenges all of us need to work together and put our differences aside and make the society a fair and amazing society.
