In Under the Cope of Heaven by Patricia Bonomi, she depicts many of the hardships that the new colonies continue to face throughout their settlement. She discussed the religious, political and societal turmoil that all the colonies struggle with, each in separate ways depending on religious affiliation, geographical location, and population demographics. She argues that religion played a very important role not only in the colonist everyday life, but also in the government and economy that is established. She states that the preaching in churches from ministers and other preachers of power was key in molding the public opinion on political standpoints, leading to a great impact on society. The FLDS church is one of the largest Mormon fundamentalist denominations and one of the largest organizations in the United States whose members practice polygamy. Polygamy is illegal, in 1890 the Mormon church ended its practice of polygamy, which created a split in the church. Fundamentalists moved to secluded areas where they could continue their practice of plural marriage.

The era of the Han dynasty in China, simply referred to as ‘Han China,’ was an extremely prominent one, with power that almost rivaled the Romans themselves. During this period of China, achievements and accomplishments reached new heights as the Silk Road opened, which allowed connection with the western world. However, even with all this, Han China still fell, thanks to opposing forces in the form of nomadic tribes, several natural disasters that were interpreted as angry messages from the gods, and internal/political unrest. During the Han dynasty and the opening of the Silk Road, there were several aggressive, nomadic tribes that centered around the Asian area.

This religious aspect to these absolute monarchs caused the people to have respect for their rulers. People thought “Fear God, Honor the King.” (Document 5) It meant that people should have faith in their Kings and fear the course that God has set for them. They believed that monarchs were sent to do the good deeds of god and that using their power for evil was a horrible sin.

In the movie Kingdom of Heaven, there were many inaccuracies throughout the film. Although the movie did follow the lines of the Second Crusade, things throughout the film turned out to be fictional. Some of these inaccuracies are how the love interests played out between Balian and Sibylla, those are not correct for the actual Crusades. Another inaccuracy is how people lived longer than they were supposed to after being wounded. Adding on to how people were wounded, they had medicine in the movie that they did not actually have back then.

Various religions across the world employ several different concepts that non-believers often find very strange or difficult to grasp. There is however a concept that is universally understood and somewhat accepted by the vast majority of our contemporary society. This is of course the concept of an afterlife. The afterlife can be defined as a sort of state of being where the consciousness of an individual persists even after the physical death of the body. This concept plays a central role in nearly all religions that employ it and is sometimes dependent on the existence of a God.
