Have you ever wondered how long you could keep a secret from everyone you know? The Manhattan Project was one of the most kept secrets. It was a secret project to make the first atomic bomb ever. Now how is this related to now? It is related because the creation of that bomb helped the warfare that countries today use. Now you might be wondering how? The creation of the first atomic bomb and the dangers that come with it is now banned in the entire world to not use atomic warfare in wars. Also it changed the way that people worked. This was Leslie R. Groves. Groves was a United States Army Corps of Engineers Office as well as the director of the Manhattan Project. In September of 1942 he was first appointed as the director of the project. He was incharge of all of the scientific things, construction, and security and military things that went into the project. He basically oversaw the whole project. The project under his command started in Columbia University and the University of Chicago. But the main places that people would work on it were Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Hanford. Scientists would come and work on the site. Grove personally selected J. Robert Oppenheimer as the leader in the Los Alamos laboratory. People would describe Groves as stubborn, intelligent, and well driven. In looking for someone to lead the project you would look for someone who could be a leader and someone that can work with all different types of people. You also would have to look for someone that is good with problem solving and makes the best decisions to help the project and not hinder it. They have to be able to keep a secret and you can’t even tell your family. As well as keeping a secret from your family you have to keep it from the whole world. Groves was the best option. He is hardworking and motivated. He kept a huge secret for most of his life. He led the project until 1947. Grove then retired from the military in 1948 and then died in 1970 in Washington D.C. In mid July 1945 President Truman was notified that Japan had started the construction of the first atomic bomb and by then it was a race to make the bomb first. President Truman knew that this project would cost billions of dollars but the only way that they could stop the Japanese was to beat them at their own game. The plan was to destroy most of Japan's biggest cities and after that the U.S. would have the advantage. The U.S. had a plan before the bombings, it was to take down the islands that were the most resourceful. This would then make the U.S. be able to take over the other island more easily. Once they destroy all the resources Japan would have no choice but to surrender. The plan was still in motion until the President was notified of the creation of the atomic bomb. This was a major bump in the original plan. The only way that the U.S. even had a chance to win was to make the bomb and destroy the biggest cities in Japan. But this was not the first time bombing had taken place. Bombing really started around 1942, there were millions that had died because of bombings and a lot of soldiers had also died because of air raids. The atomic bomb would be much different. The bomb would destroy things that were miles away and still have effects that are devastating. They would be so devastating that Japan would have to surrender and there would be no other choice.
