In the Mexican-American war of 1846 the United States of America was justified in going to war with Mexico because of many reasons. First Texas decided that did not want to part of Mexico they wanted to be part the Union (United States). It was America’s Manifest Destiny to go out and conquer the land, and the Mexican government wasn’t stable enough to handle their lands. “Texas had determined…to annex herself to our Union” because of the increasing numbers of American settlers that filled the northern part of the Rio Grande. This led Texans to successfully go for an annexation causing a war between the United States and Mexico.
In April 25, 1846, the U.S. went to war with Mexico over the U.S. annexation of Texas. Later in the war, it was revealed that America’s true intensions were to expand slavery and to claim western territory. This skirmish between the U.S. and Mexico became known as the Mexican-American War. The Mexican-American War was fought from the April 25, 1846 to February 2,1848 and took place on disputed land, in what’s current day Texas. This yearlong combat resulted in Mexico losing and even more importantly, the loss of half of Mexico’s national territory in the north.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in February 2, 1848 and brought peace to the United States and Mexico. The division in the country over slavery continued. Two major events during this time was the declaration of the Mexican –American War and the Trail of Tears. The immoral war between America and Mexico was very controversial but clearly fell towards America being guilty. This war began in 1846 when newcomers were moving in. Mexico had enforced rules for the newcomers to pursue. By offering cheap land, all Mexico had asked were for the newcomers to follow the laws. This led to Texans feeling unsatisfied with their government which caused them to act out and breaks the rules.

Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836, though the Mexican Government encouraged border raids and any type of takeover meant war. 1844, President Polk was not only for re-annexing Texas, but had set his eye on New Mexico, Oregon, and California.

Violence is seen and heard of on the U.S. side of the border quite frequently which raises the question, why is it called the “Mexican” drug war if it’s happening on American soil?
