What Path Will You Take? You have different paths you can take in life, for highschool, for sports, for college, for classes, even for the friends you can make or have. But, sometimes you want something to happen before it will happen. In sports, if you want to win that much, sometimes people cheat the game, or people may cheat on tests, or just try to get ahead. But, if you do that your life may not end up the way you want it to be. The short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs explains the White family ends up with a magical monkey’s paw and interferes with fate. We as humans control our own destiny by the choices we make. One reason humans choose their own destinies is by making choices in life that can lead to an end result. Humans choose their own destiny, by choosing the paths they want to follow. This idea is shown throughout the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs on pages 20-21 which explains how Sergeant Major Morris wants to “wash his hand” of the Monkey’s Paw and he wants to get rid of it. Mr. White takes the paw from Morris and explains how if Morris doesn’t want it he should give it to him, yet again Morris doesn’t agree but gives it to Mr. White. Mr. White asks how to make a wish and Morris explains it to him, at the time he doesn’t make a wish. When Morris leaves the White’s son Herbert tells his father he will be happier if the house was paid off, so Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds. Mr. White knows it's a bad idea and tries to fight it. When he wished for Herbert to come back he came back, but what we thought was friendly, kind little Herbert was not. This ghost of Herbert was banging on the door very loudly, and Mr. White knew it was going to happen. He was searching for the Monkey’s Paw and finally found it and wished for it to go away. In the end of the story Mr. and Mrs. White still had a dead son and unhappiness. This shows that Mr. and Mrs. White were very greedy with what they wanted and ended up losing someone they loved.
