The Vengeful Games By Evie Nold Have you ever played a game and died because you messed up? In these two books, main characters were tricked and messed up, causing terrible outcomes. The Cask of Amontillado and The Most Dangerous Game have similarities in plots. Both of the plots In The Most Dangerous Game, the protagonist Rainsford was tricked into playing a physical game and a mind game. The text states the dangerous game as “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess!” (Conell) It’s a very physical game where he was fighting for his life, hiding in trees and around the jungle, and running away from Zaroff while being face to face with him, but it was also a mental game. Rainsford was playing this game knowing he could die with even the simplest mistake. Rainsford needed to constantly think of what to do in every possibility, and make death traps to try and slow the dogs and his helpers. He played his cards right and survived, killing Zanoff out of revenge. The similarities in Cask of Amontillado have a similar plot as well. In the Cask of Amontillado, it’s not a physical game, it is merely a mental game. At the start of the book, Montresor lies to Fortunato about the Amontillado alcohol being deep in the catacombs so he can put his plan into place,this is where the “game” starts.
