In the novel How the García Girls Lost Their Accents the Author, Julia Alvarez, writes about four girls and part of that revolves around their relationships with men. In all of their relationships with men, he has the power in the relationship which means he makes the decisions for them. When they lived in the United States the girls and their mother had more say in the society. When they lived in the Dominican Republic men just saw them as submissive housewives who bear their children.
Overall, gender shapes these individuals experience in United States. Many either assimilate to hegemonic ideals or resist it. Latinx migrants, youths, and queers all face the gender inequities that society implements on them due to their social location. Thus, gender is one of the many factors that affect the Latinx community and continue to affect it.

Many who get carried away by stereotypes about this group will say that they are dangerous or do not have a good education. For example, women should stay at home doing the housekeeping while the men work. But, this is not far from reality. Many of the women are affected because of the men in this group, they feel superior towards women. These women feel that they can be doing something better in their life, but there is someone who holds them back.
The novel tells the various experiences of the women that existed in oscar’s life. There is a consistence of maltreatment of women starting from the beginning of the Cabral history and their fuku. The Aztec identity for the self or personal identity, is elusive because most of the documents talk about the social identity which played a major role in Aztec culture; this does not mean that personal identity was not present but it was not a dominate factor as it is today. Social identity is defined as a person’s conception and expression of their own and other’s individuality. Aztec culture was rich combinations of cultures from the people that made the Aztec empire; traditions that were passed down through generations influenced the way people lived within the society. For my project I have decided to incorporate my topic of traditional gender roles in an event the Hispanic Honor Society will host where we will show “La Mission” which is a movie that portrays all the known stereotypes and traditional norms such as sexuality associated with the low-rider Hispanic Culture in the Mission district of San Francisco. After the movie, we will have a panel discussing how the Hispanic culture sees sexuality and how traditional gender roles affect their views. My goal for this event is to raise awareness for how the Hispanic culture glorifies gender roles based on norms set by society over time. I want those who attend the event to realize the catastrophic outcomes that traditional gender roles can have in families,
In Social Problems, Anna Leon-Guerrero (2016) she states, “… The functional perspective, examines the functions or consequences of the structure of society. Functionalist use a macro perspective, focusing on how society maintains social order” (13). Society has created expectations on what is viewed as acceptable or unacceptable behavior and this can include criminal behavior. This is any deviation from the social norms that are agreed by the majority of the community and the violation of any existing laws that is passed by legislation. For an example, a single parent losses’ his or her job and are worried whether the rent is covered with his or her last paycheck or whether they will qualify for food stamps.
During my two interviews my with my two people of the Hispanic culture I came to find they were both had a good level of health literacy from a quick glance. It’s interesting I came to this conclusion fast after asking them each their questions, because I barely know these two on a personal level. Raul I met last year at comicpalooza, where we bonded over love over television and movies and came in contact since, mostly having conversations about show/movies; but never had conversations on anything like this level. Francis I met over swim class this fall at UH recreation center, so I came to the conclusion to pick two people I didn’t really know to ask these questions for this paper.
First, gender roles in a society have a huge cause and effect that affects the people in the society, in the novel things fall apart these roles greatly affect family life. An example of this is how Okonkwo, the main protagonist in things fall apart, leads his family. Okonkwo is very strict and expects his wives and children to obey his every command, this caused his young wives and children to be scared of him. “Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children”(13).
The reading “Gendering Organizational Theory” written by Joan Acker analyzes the importance of implementing gendered organizations into the organization of public administration that integrate the role of women with neutrality. The author advocates for the usage of gender structures that advocates for gender-neutral character, job evaluation and the concept of abstract worker into the structure of complex organizations. Acker argued, “Jobs and hierarchies are represented as gender neutral, and every time such a job evaluation system is used, the notion of gender-neutral structure and the behavior based on that notion are re-created within the organization” (p. 425). The reading begins its discussion by mentioning the differences in treatment, society roles, and limitations and women face in their daily lives.
Social structure theories look at the formal and informal economic and social arrangements of society that cause crime and deviance. The negative aspects of social structure such as disorganization within a family, poverty, and disadvantages because of lack of success in educational areas are looked upon as the producers of criminal behavior (Schmalleger, 2012). The three major types of social structure theories are Social Disorganization, Strain, and Culture Conflict (Schmalleger, 2012). Social disorganization theory is based on the idea that changes, conflict, and the lack of social consensus in society are the reasons for criminal behavior. This theory views society as a living organism and that criminal behavior is compared to a disease.
This article, “Gender Development Research in Sex Roles: Historical Trends and Future Directions” was written in a 2011 on NCBI, which points towards how the gender roles are different and how the society views them. This text includes the study of gender development, sex roles and trends over the past 35 years. Today gender roles, especially in the United States, are different from what they were in the past. But there are still many differences in roles of sex in many places around the world where women are considered less than men. They are not allowed to go out without a man going along.
