The book The New Catacomb, by Arthur Conan Doyle, is a form of Gothic literature due to many reasons, including the use of words by the author, the mood of the story, and the actions of the characters. There are many different times old-style english words and wordplay were used in the story, which is a very big aspect of Gothic writing. Words like, “Amphorae” and “ Arduous” and wordplay such as, “Painfully, slowly, and doggedly, with extraordinary tenacity and single-mindedness…” show the readers what time period it is taking place in, which is the Victorian-era, and how the use of old english style words and wordplay in the story affect it and the mood overall. The mood is also a very important aspect of Gothic literature and writing and is very prominent is this story as well. The way the author and the narrator describe the catacombs like they do, makes the reader feel creeped out and maybe even scared. They describe the feeling of being down there in the dark, the way the bones of the dead lay and look like, and the overall feeling you would have if you walked through a catacomb deep underground.
