Darry was a special part in his “family” and it meant a lot to him to call himself a greaser. When the disease occurred, the lungs weren’t the only things. Every time he coughed blood came out and the gang couldn’t do anything about it. His family was proud of everything he has provided for them, and they will never forget all to memories that occurred before the death of Darry Curtis.
Darry Curtis is a character in the novel, “The Outsiders” by Susan Hinton. He is the oldest of three brothers, who then becomes the parent after his parents died in a car accident. Darry’s personality and relationship with his brother Ponyboy changes as the story evolves. Darry was a superstar in high school.
Darry Curtis is a very caring individual but has a hard outer layer that many readers can identify with. Through Darry’s hard work, responsibility, and athleticism he provides for his family. To begin with, Darry is very hardworking. He has two jobs and works all the time. Many times in the book he cannot go out with his friends because he has to work the next day.
Like his brothers, he's super smart and athletic. He's strong, principled, very serious, often grumpy, and can get violently angry. Pony tells us that before their parents died, Darry "had been real popular in high school; he was captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the Year" (1.81). Because he's so physically fit, the gang calls him "Superman" and "Muscles" and Darry doesn't get upset about it (7.45). But, Pony tells us, one time Steve made the mistake of referring to him as "all brawn and no brain" and Darry nearly shattered his jaw.
A “Great Being” from The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is a Darry. Darry is a “Great Being” because he/she shows the trait of being selfless. In the story The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton, there are two rival groups/ gangs, the greasers and the Socs. A young boy named Ponyboy explained his journey being a greaser and the sacrifices, consequences, and decisions he had to manage with. This story reminds me of William Shakespeare's story Romeo and Juliet of their similarities which are they gangs, fights, and loyalty and differences that are the wealthiness, behaviors, and between the two books. One of the similarities of the two books is the groups/ gangs, because in Romeo and Juliet there are the Montague and Capulets and in The Outsiders there are the greasers and the Socs. They are both enemies and try to sabotage and fight each other when every they have the chance to.
In S.E Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders, Darry discloses that although he seems stern he cares and wishes to protect his family. When Ponyboy returns home past his curfew Darry is furious, but also extremely concerned, so he questions Pony by saying ‘“I reckon it never occurred to you your brothers might be worrying their heads off … Can’t you use your head?”’ () As before Darry had learned Ponyboy and Johnny had been sleeping in an empty lot while it was cold outside and responded by saying “”You haven’t even got a coat on.’” () Darry reacted in a manner that seemed like he was uncaring and mean, but Ponyboy had scared him by risking getting injured or ill. Darry had been forced to grow up faster to take the place as caretaker of his brothers
But then, Darry’s gone through a lot in his twenty years, grown up too fast.” This shows that he had to take care of his siblings when his parents had died. Darry is also a hero when he took care of Ponyboy when he was sick. According to the text on page 160 it says “ He crawled over me and flopped down and before Darry came back in with the soup we were both asleep.”
This preludes that throughout Darl’s life he always has had the harder life and, in so, has become more aware of everything that surrounds him. He becomes a character that isn’t close with anyone but still feels like he has a connection to them through what he can observe in them. Other characters in the novel don’t necessarily speak to him directly or relay information through him, he just already knows this information because of how he reads people, showing a deep understanding he has of the psychological aspects of
If Ponyboy had to describe his older brother, “He looks older than twenty-tough, cool, and smart” (Hinton 6). Having a good image like the one Darry has on the gang can really affect them positively as they look up to someone to hopefully strive for. Darry knew that none of the boys had a father to look up to so instead of being another member of the Greasers, he took the biggest responsibility ever, which is to be the “man” of the the group. Darrel has every internal characteristic of being a good person but he also wants the gang to look their best to keep the reputation of a Greaser high. On the night of the rumble Darry was for sure trying to be an epitome for his gang and maybe even impress the Socs, “Darry had on a black T-shirt that showed every muscle on his chest even the flat hard muscles of his stomach” (Hinton 132).
Darrel, or Darry has always wanted to become something amazing in life, but sadly when his parents died in a fatal car crash, he was left to raise his two younger brothers, Sodapop, and Ponyboy. More specifically, Darrel chooses his gang over his potential future to care for his friends but sadly, “. . . Darry has never really gotten over not going to college” (Hinton 109). Basically, anybody would choose to finish a career over a more strenuous life of arduous occupations. Of course, Darry would have chosen college over two jobs, but because of his compassion towards the gang, he would choose them over anything.
Given Darry’s accomplishments, it is clear that he would have been a fantastic student and would have made his parents proud. Coming from a working class background, he would very likely have been the first person in his family to go to college, serving a role model for his younger brothers. Despite his parent 's death, Darry could have forgone his responsibilities, since he is an adult and still attend college, leaving his brothers to survive on their own in foster care, or a boys’ home. However, he does not take this option and instead, Darry assumes
How “The Outsiders” written by S.E Hinton is coming of age novel During life, people will go through tragic experiences, difficult period of time and pressured by the society around them that eventually their innocence will fade with age. First of all, before Ponyboy Curtis had met the two girl Socs in the cinema (Sherry Valance and Marcia), he had thought that every person who are a member of their rival’s social group were very wealthy, but very threatening towards The Greasers.

The Outsiders is a book where a ragtag group of greasers band together and overcome victories, tragedies, and above all, build an even stronger bond of brotherhood. Ponyboy Curtis’ change was a slow process, but a lot happened to him throughout the novel. He goes through many events at the start, middle and at the end of the novel too. At the start of the novel, Ponyboy was just an innocent and smart kid who lived with the gang known as, “The Greasers”, but by the end of the novel, Ponyboy is a different person compared to how he was in the beginning. The events that took place in the middle of the novel has some key events that make him change his personality and opinion on life, and that the reader learns that his personality and opinion changes because of the dramatic events he goes through like how Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston’s death.
