Sure enough, they helped me sit up and I scooted awkwardly onto the surgery table. Once I was comfortable and lying down, they gave me my final sedative and antibiotic and before I knew it, I was out.
The next time I woke up I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t remember anything and I had no clue where I was. There was this thing, this tube shoved down my throat and I realized then that something went wrong. I tried yanking the tube out so I could talk, so I could see if there was anyone there.
“Jocey.” It was my mother. “Jocey, honey you have to leave the tube in. It’s the only thing keeping your airways open right now. You need to leave it in.”
