¨You don't need materials to find happiness.” This quote shows how people do not need materials and money to be happy with there life. In the novella The pearl by John Steinbeck, a poor fisherman finds a huge pearl after his baby boy gets stung by a scorpion. Initially Kino is going to pay for medicine for the baby boy named Coyotito, but as the story progresses Kino , the poor fisherman, begins to want more and more. But it is not only Kino who desires wealth and experiences greed. Through the authorś characters the lazy doctor, the three mysterious attackers, and the protagonist Kino,himself, the reader sees how they show that materialism and greed left unchecked, can lead to immoral behavior, such as violence.

After Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion they rush to the doctor. They are hoping he will heal the baby. Instead they get complete opposite, when they went there the doctorś servant is at the front of the gate. Kino tells the servant what he wants and the servant goes to the doctor who is in the house. When the servant tells the doctor the average person would think he would be more than happy. Yet he is not he instead wants money for the treatment or he will not do it. The doctor remarks ¨ Has he any money¨(11). This shows how greedy he is by asking for money first. Then later on when Kino finds the pearl the doctor immediately tells everyone how the baby is his patient. He soon finds out that the baby is getting better so he has to do something about it. He then poisons the baby to make him sick again , then the doctor comes in acting like a hero to save the baby. Readers might think why poison a baby if you already have everything a person needs, He has clothes, food, a servant, and an amazing house.What more could he want. For example the narrator notes, ¨dressing gown of red watered silk from Paris.¨ And also ¨silver tray with a silver chocolate pot and a tiny cup of eggshell china ¨(10). ¨He felt cloth, struck at it with his knife and missed and struck again and felt his knife go through cloth and, then his head crashed with lightning¨(37). This attacker flees with a wound, but the second attackers did not. In the middle of the night, Kino hears people outside. So he goes to inspect what it was. At that moment we don't know what is happening because the fight happens from Juana´s perspective. When the fighting begins to go quiet Juana rushes outside with a stone, but only sees Kino with blood running down his head. Now this is the second time Kino gets hurt and yet still doesn't throw the pearl away. The greedy attackers might of just hurt him, but next time they will not be so easy. The third time was the worst of them all. They quickly ran up to Kino while he was outside. They search him for the pearl as fast as they can,but found nothing because Kino accidentally drops the pearl from his hand while he is getting attacked by burglars. Not only was this happening, but at the same time more attackers were searching the house and the baby box. After not finding anything they decide to burn the house and to destroy the family canoe.
