Husband and wife Kino and Juana make a living in the brush houses of La Paz by pearling. This week their young baby Coyotito was stung by a scorpion and were refused service by the doctor. The couple could not do anything to help their baby and continued on with their normal routines and tried to ease the pain with seaweed. On Wednesday morning, Kino was fortunate enough to find a large pearl and discovered it had wondrous powers, which were good and bad.

Later in the day when the family found the wonderful pearl neighbors gathered at the couple’s house to witness its beauty and power. Those in need began to ask Kino for help but Kino believed the pearl should be used in providing his son with the schooling he never got as a young boy. She tried to keep quiet but her husband awoke and followed her to the shore. When he saw the pearl he struck her to the ground and kicked her in the side, Kino left Juana wounded on the ground and headed home. On his walk home, Kino crossed paths with an unrecognizable man who tried to steal the pearl from his hands. In a split second Kino pulled out his knife and stabbed the man in fear of losing the pearl, killing the man. When Juana caught up to Kino and saw the dead man they decided to leave town.
Kino described the incident on the beach that night to a source explaining that the pearl became his soul and without it he was nothing. Juana returned to their brush house before leaving to gather a few items and grab Coyotito. As she was leaving the house burst up in flames, the cause is unknown. The couple left the town that night in the dark in fear of their neighbors following them. Kino’s brother, Juan Tomas, helped them by hiding them for a bit and his wife provided them with food.
