The perennialist theory was mainly used during the 1800s. Students learned traditional subjects using the mental discipline approach. The more students exercised their mind, the more value a subject attained.

During World War I and II, education focused on the whole child concept. Schools no longer focused on solely educating and stimulating student’s intellectual growth. Educators sought to educate children physically, mentally, and socially.
