Extra -Gum Advertisement The purpose of this commercial is to encourage the viewer to realize the importance of a stick of Extra gum in their life. The commercial begins with a tender moment between a new father and his young daughter as he chews a piece of Extra gum and makes an origami bird out of the wrapper. The father’s act of giving an origami gum wrapper to his daughter is repeated through different stages of the daughter’s life: at her birthday, at the beach, at the ball game, at the house with a date, and an emotional moment ending with the father’s discovery that she has always kept the origami birds in a special box. The audience of this commercial is everybody who are chewing gum and there is no age limit.

Both the first and second commercials use an emotion that appeal to the majority of the population, humor. Kevin Hart, the father, goes to extreme measures to “scare off” his daughter 's date using the car finder feature on the Hyundai Genesis.
The Onion In modern society, consumers are flooded with advertisements as they move along in their daily lives; advertisements displayed on billboards and magazines, the internet and social media, and television and radio. Many companies utilize different rhetorical techniques to appeal to their audience by extending their product and its capabilities. When viewing advertisements you can see the exaggeration and hyperbolic quality some create. Some advertisements are so exaggerated that they become humorous in a sense. An article from The Onion, a satiric newspaper, displays the unintended humor that is captured within some advertisements.
The Use of Rhetorical Devices in the “Google Home” Super Bowl Commercial Companies and other forms of media strategically use the three rhetorical appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos, to market goods and/or promote ideas. The appeals have been used for centuries are still prevalent in all types of modern day propaganda. If used correctly, ethos, pathos, and logos can be used as clever tactics to engrain information into the brains of consumers. One of the more notable ways that brands use these appeals are commercials. Google, the world’s most famous multinational technology company, used the three appeals to reach success.
For the majority of the advertisement, the audience is with the child’s eye level. The perspective of the child creates a relatable mood and lets the viewers step into the child’s shoes. If smokers step into their child’s shoes and see the pain, then they will want to stop smoking to end the child’s suffering. In the beginning, the advertisement illustrates a mother and a young boy around the age of five, and once the mother leaves him he begins to cry. The audience becomes sorrowful for the innocent young child; associating that child with their own.
The repetition of the phrase “puppy, monkey, baby” for numerous times helped stick with the audience. Additionally, it emphasizes the uniqueness of the drink and allows the reader to remember the catchy song. Symbolism, being another technique, was also present in the commercial, the symbol being the hybrid animal. The hybrid animal represents a hybrid drink containing three things that should not associate with each other but end up working well together. Understanding that symbolism greatly emphasizes the importance of the drink’s concept.
This image appeals to the viewer’s emotions by illustrating a mom, who is taking care of many things while being sick, and a meaningful statement, with which all moms readers are agree. The author of the ad successfully relates this image to the viewer’s own experiences. By looking at the picture, readers easily recall moments in their life, when they had to take care of their kids, do not matter how sick they were. They become interested of the listed ad and want to find out what the author trying to tell them. Likewise, the second image appeals to the viewer’s emotions by illustrating a sick mom who is finally getting a goodnight rest after taking a cold medicine.
Arguably America’s most beloved drink of all; beer, is shared and drank for many various occasions worldwide. Budweiser, a well know beer company around the globe, released a gratifying commercial during one of the most watched events nationwide; The Super Bowl. Their commercial, “Puppy Love,” first aired in 2015, and pulled the heart strings of all beer and/or animal lovers worldwide. Using tactics such as showing the bond of relationships, expressing the American dream, and emotionally conveying a story that reaches viewers’ emotions with a powerful message that every human being can relate to in an extremely clever presentation showcasing a puppy and a horse was very brilliant. Most people have a soft spot for puppies and many others are accustomed to Budweiser’s symbolic mascot, Clydesdales horses.
The commercial published by Chevrolet in 2014 is an exceptional advertisement. This commercial advertises the Chevy Silverado truck. However, this commercial does not only influence the audience to purchase a truck but; the advertisement portrays a life lesson that every person should know and practice. The commercial by Chevrolet titled, “A Boy and His Dog,” is extremely effective and persuasive to the audience through emotion, ethics, and logical situations.
In the commercial, an interactive, hands free smart home device named Alexa loses her voice and is unable to communicate with the devices user. Amazon decides to have celebrities fill in for her while she gets her voice back. Pathos is used in this situation to appeal the audience’s emotion though humor by having well known famous people take over Alexa’s big job. Ethos is also used to achieve credibility. Amazon did this by using celebrities such as Gordon Ramsey, Rebel Wilson, Cardi B and Anthony Hopkins.
In the Budweiser commercial “Puppy Love” it utilizes the persuasion tool pathos for specifically this reason. The commercial follows a puppy that constantly sneaks away to visit his friend a Clydesdale horse (Budweiser Brasil). However, the puppy is always found by a man who returns him to his caretaker (Budweiser Brasil). The story of a cute puppy is already enough to get the average viewer to show an emotional response. Add that to a friendship with a beautiful Clydesdale horse and that is sure to get the viewers’ hearts warmed.
Pathos means to show emotions and feelings (Britannica Academic). The way Nike shows pathos in all of their advertisements and their “Just Do It” commercial is by the usage of a personal story, pictures, and the type of music that is played throughout the advertisement commercial. The clothing and shoe company uses inspiration, motivation, eagerness, excitement, and many other ideas to create an illusion to draw attention. When the intent of some of these are provided on a television, viewers want to keep watching and become interested. Throughout the video, slow music is not being played.
