The Poet X The Novel The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo is about a 15-year-old teenager from Harlem named Xiomara. In the Novel, Xiomara goes through something called “Coming of age”. As Xiomara matures and her mind gains new information she starts to question every religious teaching she has learned throughout her childhood. During this age and time, Xiomara experiences many things that other young women experience, and with that, she explores all of these new findings. Xiomara grew up in a bad neighborhood in Harlem with her twin brother Xavier and their friend Caridad. In this area, there are drug dealers and teenagers who have kids before their 18th birthday and in between all of these bad influences there is a church where Xiomara and her family spend plenty of time. While everyone else is outside doing irresponsible things, Xiomara is in church like it’s her own jail cell. Her Mom also referred to as Mami in the book is a very religious person. This is one of the toughest times for a teenager because they are experiencing many things they have never experienced once in their life and that’s when teenagers start to change, most people call it their “Rebel” phase and that’s what Xiomara is going through right now, her rebellious phase. During this phase, Xiomara began to do things behind her Papi and mami’s back. This is where she tries to learn to be an independent young woman but it’s hard not for Xiomara but her Mami because bother her Mami and Papi don’t trust her judgment at all.
