The name "Seminole" came about from the tribe's original name of yat'siminoli meaning "free people". That was the name the Seminoles had referred to themselves as because of their refusal to be conquered and converted by the "white man". The Seminole Tribe has long had a unique history with both the land of the Southeastern United States, and with the government of the United States. Their relationship with the land has been drastically altered as the result of three Seminole wars which displaced and relocated the Seminole tribe. As a result of the persecution by President Andrew Jackson, members from a variety of tribes in the Southeast United States began migrating into Spanish Florida to seek refuge.
This relates to relations with the Powhatans because the Powhatans knew how to survive there, the could have helped the settlers but they chose not
The Lakota Indians The Lakota is a tribe located in the northern plains of America. They are related to the Sioux by culture, Language, and history. The Dakota are also a related tribe to the Lakota. They are known as Teton or also western Sioux. In the 1640’s the Lakota stayed closer to the Sioux.
Jamestown an English colony in Virginia had over 440 people dead in one winter. Here are the mistakes they made, and the problems they created. A few of those reasons are a lack of food, Indian attacks, disease. The first problem is lack of food, the colonists in Virginia had not predicted what it would be like then and how they would come in a drought ranging from 1607-1612 (B).
Native American Research: Chief Pontiac Intro Chief Pontiac is a Native American that is important to the United States’ history. He was a part of the Ottawa tribe and led the American Indians to a revolution also known as the Pontiac War or Pontiac’s Rebellion, which was against the British when they first came to America. He wasn’t afraid to die for his rights. He believed that they all had rights to live in America and to live how they wanted to live. I chose him for my Native American Research because he was a courageous Native American hero.
The Mohawk Tribe The Mohawk were part of the Iroquois Nation and now lives around Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Their native homeland extended through parts of New York and near the Mohawk River and into what are now the mountains of Vermont. Today, many of the Mohawks live in Canada.
The Potawatomi tribe came to this area several hundred years ago and established a home here for many decades. In summer, the families all relocated to one large village, while, in winter, they set up separate, smaller camps. The following paragraphs describe a typical year for a Potawatomi family in this area a couple hundred years ago. Can you imagine their homes as you read about their routines in the different seasons?
Iroquois Confederacy was an association of five tribes named Mohawk, Oneida, Onandaga, Cayuga, Seneca. The conference was characterized by a peaceful pact between the tribes. In 1700, the Tuscarora tribe joined to the confederacy making the Six Nations Iroquois. Each tribe was compound by two moieties, and each moiety was compound by one or more exogamous clans. The Iroquois Confederacy had a huge importance in America History because they were the immense native American political group that fought with French and England settlement of the America.
The Hoh Native American tribe has lived amongst the Nature Bridge camp for many centuries and has many interesting topics to study such as the reservation, people, food, clothing, recreation, religion, myths and legends, the age of the tribe, and the important events on the history of the tribe. Because of these, the tribe is rich in history and culture, making it a great essay topic to study for my Nature Bridge trip of 2017. The Hoh generally live in the northwestern part of Washington, and they have an entire reservation where a majority of their population lives. This reservation is on the Pacific coast, on the mouth of the Hoh River.
There has been several conflicts involving the United States such as the Mexican war, western Indian war, civil war, the cold war and several other wars. The Smithsonian goes through several of these wars. After looking through several of these conflicts I found the most interesting to be western Indian war. Indians were moved to reservations against their will, the Indians did try to fight back. However they were fighting in a battle that had already been lost.
Exam 1 Essay The Hopi tribe is strongly entrenched in religion, spirituality, morals and ethics, and as a matter of fact, the meaning of Hopi is “The Peaceful People” or “Peaceful Little Ones”. Hopis strive to be respectful of all living things, meanwhile, they follow the instructions of the Massaw, the Earth Guardian. The Hopi are one of the oldest living tribes in existence; to this day they are still living the Hopi way by continuing to conduct ceremonies and traditions meanwhile still speaking their ancient language. The Native American tribe are currently located on a Hopi Reservation in Northeastern Arizona with 19,327 Hopis according to the 2010 census (Data Access and Dissemination Systems (DADS), 2010). First, The cherokee was a tribe that settled in south carolina in the early 1700’s. The cherokee tribe called themselves the “real people”. Their government was very poor that’s why they left their home state. The cherokee was known for living in the mountains and having villages of 600 people. They lived in duabs that had holes in the top so they could have an open fire to cook the food the men hunted.
The American Revolution lasted six years and the impacts of it were everlasting(Schultz, 2010). The effects were felt by every group of people in North America and many worldwide. Even though George Washington had all of his troops vaccinated against smallpox, the colonists were not so fortunate and as a results some estimates are that as many as one hundred and thirty thousand people died from this dreaded disease. This loss of life combined with the divisions among the colonies into those loyal to Britain and those who wanted freedom would forever change the way of life for the colonists.
The Apache Indians originally came from the Alaskan region, and part of the American Southwest. Over time the tribes travelled to the United States and currently reside in Oklahoma and Texas and on reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. The Apaches were known as Nomads because they travelled around, and never settled on reservations for a long period of time. Since the nomads never settled anywhere for long, they were not accustomed to the different types of agriculture on the land which caused other tribes to overtake the land and cause the nomads to travel elsewhere.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book The Glass Castle. I found the book deeply moving as well as meaningful and gives insight to a lifestyle that is usually overlooked in society. The main take away from this book I found is a family such as the Walls, who are just getting by are usually overlooked. They were not constantly living on the streets and moved around multiple times, thus alluding attention that would have affected their life.
