Well look no further as The Prince may be the book for you. All that we ask in return is that you shred any human decency you have and begin to think solely about your own position and well being. A perfect example of this lesson is Cesare Borgia. Although he may have conquered a few cities here and there, became a ruthless killer once or twice, or be a rapist, he maintained his image by having someone else do the really cruel acts. Cesare had a scapegoat which he could use to do all his dirty work and, if needed, he could kill the scapegoat if the public got too angry with the cruel acts he committed. Cesare kept his image while his scapegoat paid the price. Also, a ruler should also sprinkle in some good acts for the public but in a way so that they are savored and not expected. Overall you have to be viewed in way that people can expect how you would rule superficially but not change how you actually rule. The next lesson is that it is better to have your followers fight for you, rather than random mercenaries. The reason can be described using an analogy. Being the good humanitarian that you are, you have to view people as functioning tools. You want to use tools that you are comfortable with and not some shabby ones you picked up off the street. Using the native followers as warriors means guaranteed loyalty if you have treated them “well” under your rule. He must know when to be immoral when the odds are stacked against him. He might also need to only tell certain things if he is asked, or only do certain things if it benefits himself. In other words, you will have to be a total self-centered prick with no empathy. That being said, if a prince were to only do the respectable acts of morality then he would inevitably reach his demise. Lastly, a prince must lie, but not be lied to. This lesson encompasses multiple ideas too. He must lie when it is in his best interest, but have the intimidation that if he were lied to, a price would be paid. Ensuring that he isn’t lied to, he must choose good subordinates that only think of the prince’s well being. Basically, get a person that would love you like a dog would. However, you must have the ability to lie to anyone without guilt or hesitation. By keeping those around you under control, it is easier to manipulate them to your best
