ADHD is fairly common, at some point we have all heard of it. ADHD is considered a disability where someone consistently shows the characteristics of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Commonly in children, you would think of them as the “class clown” in school. These children can seem to also have behavior problems, but to me it only seems that way, but they really aren’t meaning to act out the way they do, they can’t help it. After reading the text and just knowing about ADHD and people who have it, I definitely believe ADHD does exist, however I do think a lot are misdiagnosed. I think ADHD does exist because my sister has it and I have seen it firsthand. I lot of people thinks it doesn’t exist because they think kids are just being kids. Which I think a lot of them could possibly be misdiagnosed. Even according to the book it was found that 20% of the time that professional over diagnosed with ADHD (Santrock, 2016, p.195). Also the Child Mind Institute shins a little light on why. CMI makes a great point that it is crucial to understand that is really behind a certain behavior, because it could be any number of things that could be causing the symptoms of ADHD; like learning disabilities and anxiety (Spiro, 2012, 1). I have actually been misdiagnosed myself. I was in the 5 grade; and this was right before I was tested for learning disabilities. I for one didn’t want to go on the medicine because my sister defiantly had ADHD and we act sort of different, I can’t explain it. But I got placed on medicine for it, and it honestly made me worse and it is hard to explain. After that happened the school already wanted me to get tested for learning disabilities and I do have some, which could explain why it seemed that I had
