In 1955, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an executive order prohibiting discrimination against any employee or applicant for employment in the federal government because of race, color, or national origin (1). Its purpose to end discrimination, but as the action was passed, however, this executive order laid the groundwork that evolved into something bigger and more controversial than anyone could imagine.
Many people started questioning: Had affirmative action lived up to its original goal of helping minority, and less advantage population to achieve parity or equality? When look back at college admissions, many critics argue that racial preferences in college admissions hurt minority students more than they help them. Schools relax their academic standards to admit more minority students and under-represented students who enter with lower academic credentials and lower test scores end up concentrated at the bottom of the schools. Students of any race, who fall to the bottom of their class rank are unlikely to persevere and succeed in life. In addition, it is not only hurt the minorities, but also the majorities.
In Jason L Riley’s journal paper “The ‘Diversity’ Defense” pointed: in 1972, a white male named Allan Bakke had applied for admission to the medical school of the University of California at Davis and he was rejected over and over again because of that the University of California has reserved more places for minority applicants, however his academic record and test scores were better than those of nearly every admitted minority students
