Issue #2 Children typically get into trouble when they are bored or have an idle mind. Statistics show this in numbers of different studies that have been conducted over years. States that have more after school programs for children and teens usually have less crime rate as minors and lower dropout rates, but Mississippi is not one of these lucky states to have the necessary available after school programs for students. This lack of programs may be one the causes for Mississippi to be one of the higher dropout rates in country. Afterschool programs are very rare to find in Mississippi, and most of them that you find are volunteer based or low funded programs. There was very little to none negative feedback about the afterschool program from the parents or the children. The statistics show us that of the kids who are not enrolled in an after school program 17% of them are left unsupervised for an average of 7.29 hours a week which statistics also show us that kids left unsupervised are more likely to end up in some sort of legal trouble then kids that are supervised. This statistic makes it necessary for some kids and parents to at least have the resources available for an afterschool program. 67% of parents agreed that afterschool programs can help reduce the likelihood that their youth will engage in risky behaviors, such as committing a crime, the use of illegal drugs, or becoming a teen parent. In 2014 50% of parents demanded an afterschool program in Mississippi, but did not have one available in their district.
