The Pros And Cons Of Animal Experimentation

906 Words4 Pages

With the questionable accuracy of animal experimentation to answer the questions, we have about the human body system the next question that is asked is whether animal experimentation is necessary. The main reason animal experimentation is questioned on its necessity is because scientists all over the world have developed alternatives. A different type of alternative mentioned was cellular tests. Cellular tests are experiments that measure white blood cell response to chemicals and medical substances which can take the place of rabbit injections (Ask).
Then the last alternative form of animal testing is microdosing. Microdosing involves minuscule amounts of a test substance are given to human volunteers so researchers can track how said …show more content…

Specific cases mentioned include the medical breakthrough for diabetes. This breakthrough in the medical field is all thanks to the removal of the pancreases of dogs and the discovery of insulin. Another supporting claim the association made to support their opinion is the fact that the testing of the polio vaccine on animals resulted in reducing the global disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 27 cases in 2016. Without animal testing major advances in understanding and treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, and tuberculosis. The development of pacemakers, cardiac valves substitutes, and anesthetics have all been contributions of animal testing (ProCon). Another example includes Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley who won the Nobel in Physiology in 1963 for their on the nerves of squid that elucidated the basis of nervous transmission. John C. Eccles performed work on cats’ spinal cords that is recognized for first incontrovertibly demonstrating the nature of the synapse (Is Animal). Rabbits are commonly used for their eyes and skin to test the irritancy of chemicals in both areas to determine if it is safe for humans (What). It is hard to say whether these discoveries would have been made if animal testing was not
