Dress codes have always been one of the biggest topics when it comes to school, and a controversial one at that. Although dress codes encourage order and unity, it can also be seen as oppression of individuality by not being able to express themselves throughout what they’re wearing. Even though in some cases, dress codes can be a good thing, I think overall it has a negative impact on students. Dress codes can be seen as suppressive, in regards to races. Here it states, “As the National Women’s Law Center summarized, “Black girls face unique dress and hair code burdens. For example, some schools ban styles associated with Black girls and women, like hair wraps.(Con 1)” Younger black students have been condemned for having their hair in braids, or even in wraps. This can be seen as insensitive, and offensive to certain cultures. Most people express themselves and their cultures through their hairstyles, so seeing how school gets rid of their hairstyles is like getting rid of who they are, and where they come from. …show more content…
As said here, “Transgender students have been sent home for wearing clothing different than what’s expected of their legal sex, while others have been excluded from yearbooks.
