Epinephrine is adrenaline that is used to narrow blood vessels and open airways. The drug was isolated in 1895 by Napoleon Cybulski, and was then used in the military, growing into a multibillion dollar business after Sheldon Kaplan developed the injector pen in 1975, and approved for marketing by the FDA in 1987. The drug has not changed since and therefore the prices are not just. The main spark to this controversy was the recent election due to health care being a major topic. The Epi-Pen is also used to help people that have asthma because it opens the airways. Many of the people that rely on the epi-pens do not have the money to afford a pack of two epi-pens for the outrageous price of 600$. The price of epi-pens has increased over 400% recently. The producer of Epi-pens (Mylan) should not be taking advantage of the already unlucky and unfortunate consumers. I believe that this is not morally just. A change is due to be made to help the poor consumers that have no choice but to be taken advantage of by Mylan. There is no reason for such hikes in the price for many reasons one being that the drug epinephrine has remained the same since the 1900’s when it was first made available. The only improvements that have been made are to the delivery system which does not requires a price hike of over 400%. The recent innovations in the pen have made the pen safer and more usable, but have not justified 2 epi-pens costing
