Rachael Ray: The Two sides to Net Neutrality In an article written by author Gerry Smith, titled “Why Net Neutrality Has Sparked a Whopper of a Fight: QuickTake”, gives an overall explanation of net neutrality is, the arguments against it, and how it incorporates in the everyday life of today’s society. Though the article itself stays unbiased, and informative. Smith does a great job of making the article clear and understandable. While presenting the reader with an explanation of what net neutrality is and why it should be found as important.
A monopoly is defined as “complete control of the entire supply of goods or of a service in a certain area or market”. In the article, We Need Competition, Not an Internet Monopoly it talks about Comcast Corporation being the largest internet service provider. Not only does Comcast provide internet service, they also provide cable television and home phone services. Comcast owns NBC Universal making the media conglomerate one of the largest in media markets. According to Cassidy (2014) “It’s not just big by American standards.
Net-neutrality is the principle that providers of Internet services enable access to all contents with no prejudice or discrimination against sites or products regardless of the source. In December, the U.S. government repealed the national regulations that prevented “Internet Service Providers from blocking legal content, throttling traffic or prioritizing content on their broadband networks” in favor of a “looser set of requirements that ISPs disclose any blocking or prioritization of their own content.” In summary, the government has decided to change net-neutrality and make it easier to profit from. The government’s want, and subsequent success, to change the strict guidelines by which net-neutrality operated with is supported by the Chairman
As some of us might know there has been a passionate debate on the issue of the net neutrality in which there is strong feelings on both sides of the debate. Net neutrality is the idea government should regulate the internet so that the major telecommunications companies won’t be able to turn the internet landscape into a monopoly. This paper will examine both sides of the net neutrality debate in which the content of this paper will explore both the pro and cons of net neutrality. At the end of the paper I will reveal my true thoughts about net neutrality and will discuss what I have learned about this issue in the process. Some of the pros of net neutrality include easy access to information, promotion of free speech and promoting innovation for smaller internet companies.
The net neutrality laws that require an ISP to “post,” or “send,” or allow “access” to any content of the subscriber's choosing, are, for all practical purposes, compelled access mandates akin to the Florida right to access statute at issue in Tornillo (Travis, 2006). Even though these mandates do not literally "restrict" an ISP from publishing content of its own choosing, they would compel the ISP to convey or make available content that, in its editorial judgment, it would otherwise choose not to convey or make available. Net neutrality advocates sometimes suggest that today's major broadband ISPs choose to be mere conduits, so that compelled neutrality would not eliminate any editorial function that the ISPs are now performing. ISPs like
"As most who will read this have already heard, net neutrality has been under fire lately. Chairman of the FCC, Ajit Pai has come under a lot of fire along with it. His opinion on the subject has shown to be quite controversial to the people of the United States. As usual in situations such as this where our constitutional rights are attacked, the people are trying to fight back against this. Protests, blog posts, speeches, etc.
Recommendations With the recent repeal of net neutrality laws, there are two major concerns regarding these new regulations guidelines that should be addressed. First, how will the FCC regulate ISP's using its existing powers? Specifically, how will the FCC review, monitor, and supervise the activities of ISP's without overstepping their ancillary jurisdiction?
Originally, the internet was viewed as a telecommunication service, and therefore was protected by the same laws. That it is a free open source for the consumer to access, without any restrictions. It was protected under the Title II “telecommunication service”. The transmitting of information between two distinct points. However, in 2002 the FCC reclassified it to Title I after the use of the cable modem service began.
"Net Neutrality “the principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.â€. Taking that away allows phone Companies such as verizon,at&t,T-mobile to slow data, government peeking into your personal life more than it is and no longer having the freedom of the internet. Without having Net Neutrality allows cellular companies to slow your data or internet if you are doing something they don't want you to on your device. So if net neutrality gets taken away if Verizon doesn't like snapchat or instagram they have the ability to slow you internet or data so slow that you can no longer use the app. Or to make more
The Ongoing Debate on Net Neutrality The debate over public methods of communication have been going on for over 200 years, and it is no surprise that it is still continuing to this day. Recent attempts to repeal laws regarding net neutrality in the U.S has reignited this debate; sparking discussion as to the pros and cons of the law. In this paper I will give several arguments as to both sides, including what a possible repeal of net neutrality laws will mean for the average consumer. As well as the effects on internet service providers (ISP’s) and their services.
“Aslan is not safe, but he is good,” (Lewis, 1994, P.48) I think this quote is appropriate for Aslan as well as Christ. Aslan comes to bring judgement on the white witch and tear her kingdom down. The bible says. "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.
that they cannot do it if it’s only because they don’t agree with what their content is about? No one. Net neutrality sets up a wall that prevents companies from becoming corrupt, and every company, start-up or conglomerate, has the same abilities on the Internet. By removing net neutrality, entrepreneurs and start-up businesses will also become inferior to the tech giants such as Netflix.
There are two main types of broadband connection, a fixed line or its mobile alternative. Both have their strengths and potential weaknesses so you need to consider what suits your needs before you sign up on a lengthy contract. Fixed line broadband is what most people have at home. It 's a fast internet connection delivered by telephone wire (ADSL) or fibre optic cable. As the latter is now capable of speeds in excess of 100Mb, an increasing number of homes have "superfast" fibre optic connections.
