When one graduate’s college it is usually one of the happiest days of their lives, they finally get to quit their low paying job and get a job that is much higher paying and hopefully a job they enjoy. However most of the time these newly college grads do not get to go buy a new car, or a house, or whatever else their heart desires instead; they have to spend about the next 20 years paying off their student loans. But what if there was another way, so that these newly grads do not have to spend 20 years paying off loans? Well maybe there is because in January of 2015 President Barrack Obama proposed the idea of free community college. This sounds great does it not?

Pros, Cons, and Alternatives, proponents of free college believe that it would benefit the entire nation, not just the individual students who take advantage of it. More of today's jobs are knowledge-based or require advanced technical skills. With that being said, better-educated workforce would help fill many of the skills gaps that prevent America's economy from growing faster. Also, if more people are able to attain employer-desired credentials, then more people can take the good-paying jobs that often go unfilled.

Over the last 12 years, federal student loan balances have quadrupled, exceeding $1.1 trillion (Lee and Looney, et al.). America’s student loan debt has skyrocketed to over $1.1 trillion. In the United States, student debt is a known problem that haunts many students and alumni due to the high prices of colleges. Many may argue student loan debt is worth it because of the job opportunities and higher earnings that can justify the debt. In contrast, others believe college prices should either drop or that the government should help with the debt.
In this day and age, it is assumed that the majority of high school graduates will be attending college, whether a two year community college or a four year college or university. The problem with this expectation of young people is that college is expensive, which is why numerous people are pushing towards free college for all, not just for the academically talented. While overall publicly funded college is unrealistic, this country could slowly overcome this issue of college debt by providing more two year community colleges across the nation with the tuition of these community colleges drastically reduced. The major reason why many people are pushing towards publicly funded college is a because of the substantial rise in college debt over the last decade.

Many people agree with the idea of making colleges across the United States free, because it gives people way more opportunities who want to succeed in life. Whether or not students graduate or not, if they pulled out student loans worth $200,000 they remain in debt for a remainder of years.
