Over a short period of time, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been incorporated into a fair amount of everyday foods. These foods and plants have a possibility of harming people and the environment. GMOs are unsafe for people and the environment because of the effects they have when consumed, and from plants that have been genetically modified through science and contamination.
Genetically modified organisms and food are unsafe for people, animals, and the environment. A few disadvantages of genetically engineered (GE) foods are viruses, illnesses, and deadly diseases. Viruses created in GE crops and plants eventually become GE foods. The viruses in GE foods are usually caused by either a well-known toxin called the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin, or by bacterial DNA that is commonly used in GE foods. Genetically engineered foods contain cells, and within those cells are parts of virus genes. These virus genes have the ability to merge with genes of contaminating viruses. Scientists experiment often with GMOs, to see which results will both benefit and harm the environment. Genetically modifying organisms allows scientists to create new uses for living things. “When scientists genetically modify a plant, they insert a foreign gene into the plant’s own genes.” (Regis 4) For example, if a scientist inserts a foreign gene from a pesticide-resistant organism, then the plant will become pesticide-resistant. This works by the genes bonding together, so the foreign gene becomes a new addition to the plant’s genetic code. These actions could benefit the environment because they could help plants survive and produce longer. On the other hand, organic farmers do not use harmful lab chemicals. They use organic materials like compost, straw, and animal manure to enhance the health and structure of the soil. These natural resources will allow plants to grow more natural and
