As mankind evolves so does our technology. With breakthrough discoveries in the field of science we no longer have to worry about problems our ancestors faced. Many of these breakthroughs have a positive effect on the world, however some seem to still be in the developing stages. In the discussion of GMO’s, the government of Peru believes that science has not yet researched GMO’s long term safety and effects to the extent of instituting it as a common food source throughout the world. . It is not yet clear whether the benefits of GMO’s outweigh the possible risks, and this is not a chance the Peruvian government will take. The government of Peru has previously banned the use of GMO’s in 2011 for 10 years. This ban should allow time for the scientist to further research and come to a clear conclusion on the subject of GMOS. This would allow GMO’s to produce results showing all the risks and benefits of GMO’s. This ban, would allow Peru and countries all over the world to make an educated correct decisions on GMO’S safety by looking at the facts. GMO’s could have negative physiological effects on Peru’s native species, an example of this, is from Alejandro Argumedo of the ANDES Association in Cusco says he “worries about the physiological effects the introduction of GMOs would have on Peru’s native species.” He says Peru “has one of the top 10 biodiversities in the world, and it needs to be protected.” The government of Peru also believe our people should be aware of what they are buying off the shelves. President of ASPEC, Crisólogo Cáceres, comments, “Research by ASPECT confirms something that Peruvians knew all along: GM foods are on the shelves of our markets and wineries, and consumers buy them and take them into their homes to eat without knowing it.
