Formally known as the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant Program, the Federal Grant Program is considered the gateway to financial and higher educational opportunities for low-income students. It is a federal grant for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. That is not what welfare should be used for though, it should be used as an extra last resort support system for an individual until they can get back on their feet. This is why there are so many people on the street and in homeless shelters, because the government is giving them free money. This is why it should in the end be up to private organizations and charity. This is because if it is a small group of people working with the less fortunate they can get to know them individually and try to help them off of welfare or the support that they are getting. Granted there are some things that the less fortunate should have the opportunity to have and that is health care.
These programs are set out to help the people get out of the economic hardships that they are in. The government isn’t giving them enough room to grow and increase their yearly income. The government should be that support system that allows its people to grow while still giving them that extra push that they need. The government could give them room to grow and increase their income while still having the benefits. This would allow them to save, invest, and stop needing the aid the government offers.

This $956 billion in annual welfare spending is distributed among as many as 100 million people which average about $9,500 per beneficiary. I am in agreement with the article in Discover the Networks intitled; “The Welfare States’s cost to American Taxpayers” that says, “If converted entirely to cash, these benefits equal more than five times the amount of money needed to lift every poor person in the United States out of poverty” (2012). The Federal Income Tax returns filed in the United States is approximately 143 million.
The idea of welfare reformation has been tossed around for years now. The ideas of fairness, equality, and taxes have been politically argued in terms of welfare abuse. An immense amount of people tend to favor the reform because they feel the program is weak in major, prominent areas that ultimately join together to create success within the nation. The program itself, especially its organization and requirements, must be altered to better suit the non wealthy population. With such a weak formation of a nationwide service, it is no surprise there are issues in areas like abuse to the system and fraud, the formation of poverty, creating dependency, increasing drug abuse, and over taxation.
Some of the positives of the welfare system are primarily straight forward such as helping the poor buy necessities for day to day living, provides food, medical care, help people get their lives on track to where they can provide for their families. The U.S. American welfare system has helped millions of Americans who need the extra support especially, single mothers who have many jobs and many kids. However, the welfare system is also very corrupt. I see it all the time, I live in an area where violence and gangs happen and I can see the people who actually need extra help and, I also see those who chose to live off others and the government. I do feel ass the United states needs to regulate their welfare programs and make sure it is being used for needs and not wants. I know that the welfare program has been a hot topic for million of middle class Americans because of the amount of taxes that are being taken out from our paychecks.

In America there is a welfare system in place to support the individuals and families in need of assistance to bounce back into the economy. The welfare system not only aids people in poverty but also benefits the children who enter into the foster care system in the United States. According to ABC World News nearly 60,000 children in America are reported to Child Protective Services for abuse and neglect every week (2006). However, just like any government programs the foster care system faces several dilemmas with issues in adoption, abuse and neglect with foster parents and no success with the children who age out of the system.
The United States Government has allowed the welfare system to become abused over the years. It is intended for families in need of housing, food, child care, education, and healthcare. How do we define needy families? Are they able-bodied or truly in need of the assistance from the government?
