That is not what welfare should be used for though, it should be used as an extra last resort support system for an individual until they can get back on their feet. This is why there are so many people on the street and in homeless shelters, because the government is giving them free money. This is why it should in the end be up to private organizations and charity. This is because if it is a small group of people working with the less fortunate they can get to know them individually and try to help them off of welfare or the support that they are getting. Granted there are some things that the less fortunate should have the opportunity to have and that is health care.
Recommendations: Since, Welfare-to-Work was designed on a state level, each state have their way of allocating the funds and it can be different from state to state. Therefore, we identified some issues in Wisconsin, Maryland, and general. Although this may seem like a good thing from the outside, it isn’t as favorable as it appears. Each community is unique, and therefore has its own individual set of people and needs. There are 50 states in America, 3.797 million square miles, 19,354 cities, and 318.9 million people.
Welfare is a government program which provides financial aid to people who cannot support themselves. The welfare programs are funded by taxpayers; the goal of welfare is to promote the pursuance of work, education, or a better standard of living. The welfare system is now run solely by the state, and each state also has its own requirements which can cause some overlap and confusion. The federal government provides assistance through TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). This grant requires that all recipients of welfare aid must find work within two years of receiving aid (US welfare system).
The debate topic today posed the question of whether or not the social welfare programs in effect today adequately meet the needs of Canadians. The con-side argued that there are too many issues within these programs to adequately meet every citizen’s needs. The first issue is the marginalization of these program’s requirements in order to obtain them making them inaccessible to many. Although this may be true, it discards the fact that in order to be efficient and include as many “needy” people as possible, there must be requirements/criteria that people meet to use these programs. In addition, the requirements necessary to use these programs are dependent on the majority of the people who need them.
Abusing the System Ronald Reagan states, “We should measure welfare’s success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added” (qtd. in BrainyQuotes). Welfare’s success today is not being measured by how many people are leaving welfare, but how many are needing assistance. The problem is that recipients of welfare are being added by the minute, and none of them are willing to leave the program because of the benefits it provides. The United States Constitution states the federal government should provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare, but the case is that many recipients are abusing the program (Couch np). Welfare abuse is increasing greatly.
Welfare recipients around America are not doing anything to get off of welfare. Research shows that they spend more money on things they do not necessarily need, rather than carefully spending their money on the necessities. Welfare is for people who need the extra help to get themselves and their families by. Many people on welfare are wasting their money on drugs and alcohol. Welfare recipients should be required to pass a drug test in order to receive the benefits of welfare.
The United States Government has allowed the welfare system to become abused over the years. It is intended for families in need of housing, food, child care, education, and healthcare. How do we define needy families? Are they able-bodied or truly in need of the assistance from the government? Today the problem still lies with the taxpayers having to foot the bill for people that are able to work, but are spoiled by the government and refuse to seek employment.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, local and state governments as well as private charities were overwhelmed by needy families seeking food, clothing, and shelter. In 1935, welfare for poor children and other dependent persons became a federal government responsibility, which it remained for 60 years (Constitutional Rights Foundation). Over the years the federal government has begun to spend approximately $668 billion per year on 126 different welfare programs, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report. Over 50 million people are using hard working people’s tax dollars for their own needs. There should not be millions of dollars wasted away on welfare abusers.
It’s understandable that people will get fired or let go sometimes but they shouldn’t just be handed money until they die. I think that welfare should only be a temporary fix, like it was intended to be, not a life-long thing. Unemployed citizens should only be able to receive welfare check for a short period of time, long enough for them to be able to find a job. Welfare was meant to be a good system to help others during a hard time, but it was not meant to fund the unplowed until death, and it was not meant to put the working class in debt either. Millions of Americans receive government aid such as welfare every year. Of those Americans who are on welfare, many are unemployed. Some people may need welfare because they don’t make enough money to support their families. However, the amount of money spent on welfare every year is tremendous.
