“It’s not a gun control problem, it’s a cultural problem.”(Bob Barr). Gun related accidents are not necessarily caused by the guns themselves but by the people that use them irresponsibly. There are background checks to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands, but they have proven ineffective. If a background check does stop a criminal or an irresponsible gun owner from getting a gun, they can easily purchase one illegally, which gun control cannot prevent. Guns are also used by many for self defense. Furthermore, gun control cannot prevent gun related accidents.
First and foremost, guns are safe if they are used correctly and responsibly but are made dangerous if the wrong people get them, and it is easy for this to happen when it is so easy to purchase them illegally. One place where illegal purchases are made regularly are gun shows. These shows allow unlicensed buyers and sellers to meet. In some cases a person may not even know that they are purchasing a gun illegally. This is because most of the guns purchased illegally in the United States were created by actual gun manufacturers who then sold them to gun dealers. There are also many cases where guns are stolen in large amounts from gun dealers who most likely do not have adequate security to protect firearms in their protection. …show more content…

The NRA executive vice president suggested “The background check system is failing because people who do not pass are not getting punished for trying to get a gun.” New gun laws should not be put into place until the current laws, such as background checks, are enforced to their full capabilities. Also, most criminals won’t even submit background checks, they get most of their guns off a black market. Considering this, background checks are really just making it harder for law abiding citizens to purchase
