We found a federally-sponsored ‘gun show’ that never ends: small town police are armed with M16 and M14 rifles, night-vision googles, bayonets and armored trucks; junior colleges and county sheriffs procured mine-resistant vehicles (MRVs); even local park districts and forest preserves stocked up on military-style
Moskos, a harvard trained sociologist describes what is was like to work as a police officer in Baltimore’s Eastern district. As a young new police officer, Moskos was placed in the Eastern district, which is a very high crime area, one of the most dangerous areas in the United States. Moskos contends that when officers are fresh out of the academy, they are usually placed in high crime districts. Since these areas are considered to be the least desired to work. So in a sense the ghetto becomes a real life training area.
The great Criminal Justice system in this country is comprised of a great many number of agencies that can operate both dependent or independent of each other. However, within each larger agency are divisions that provide supporting roles and sections that each agency is reliant on in order to run smoothly and accomplish its larger goals. The purpose of this assessment is to examine how the City of San Diego Human Resource (HR) section manages to accomplish its goals, while enabling the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) with high quality men and women, to achieve its objectives. In studying how, a single section can influence an entire department, one can better understand the inner workings of a large agency intended to provide a needed service
Did you know theres so many violent cases where Border Patrol agents or BPA for short, don't even get charged for the awful things they do to migrants. The problem that we need to fix is how Border Patrol agents treat migrants or deal with them. We need to stop Border Patrol brutality because out there are being beat or ending up with injuries because of these abusive agents. First and for most, there are too many cases of migrants being beat by Border Patrol officers without getting any consequences. There was a case where a mans face was stepped on and kneed in the ribs after being handcuffed, the man reported it and the case was looked into but nothing was done.
Police should be recruiting military veterans and adopting the army 's sensitivity training so officers are more understanding when it comes to the people they swore to protect. Sensitivity training teaches officers how to deal with people from different religions and cultures. Perkins continues on saying that there is a divide between the local law enforcement and their communities. To help further the idea that the police department and their communities are separate, Perkins links readers to The Race Gap in America’s Police Department by Jeremy Ashkenas which presents data and statistics that show that no matter how diverse an area is, most of the police is white. However, Perkins also realizes that most police departments do not have the
There are many views out there that favor militarization of the police and just as many that oppose it. A common reason that shows the positive side of militarization is local police are given the resources where they can handle more types of events solely by themselves, without having to call for outside help from the National Guard. It can take hours and sometimes days for the National Guard to show up when they are called upon to assist a local police force. Another popular pro is police officers are equipped with better firearms and training. Police officers would also have access to bigger, more powerful military style vehicles to use at a moments notice.
This would imply that there is also a misconception view of how even black police officers are seen. The scenario was supposed to be an example of how to stop a person. However, because African Americans are seen as dangerous, the scenario described above does not imply the same idea as it does when there is a white officer pointing a gun towards a black person. The police officer present thought they saw a mugging more than anything else. People in society are not used to seen a black police officer in the streets stopping a white person as indicated by the scenario (Conlon 2).
The officers failed to consider the broader context and potential ramifications of their actions. It could be argued that alternatives, such as engaging with the youths, building a rapport and educating them, as well as treating them with respect and fairness, rather than escalating the situation and disparaging the character of the youths, could allow officers to not only comply with policy and legislation, but also more effectively police their community by building positive relationships, channels of communication, and reduction of future crime (Chan, Bargen, Luke and Clancey 1997). However, these alternatives require the appropriate use of discretion which the officers failed to
Public police are a government service that is provided at local (municipal level), state, or federal levels. Private policing isn't they are law enforcement bodies that are owned or controlled by non-governmental entities. They do not have the same hard standardized training as public police. The difference is that private police cost less to have doing the work but overtime this is changing private police in some specialties actually have better salaries than in the past. But in some case most private police like security guards they don't get taken seriously by people.
However, the race is considered a salient predictors of the attitudes towards the police institutions. The blacks are likely to be affected than the whites because of race imbalance. Less is known about the views of other races though existing studies show that race is something that is significant in explaining police brutality. As a fact, racial differences is something that is common in the relations of the citizens with the police (Chaney and Robertson 110). In explaining the accounts for the racial differences, the paper will utilize the group-position model of race relations.
A Shot In The Dark, often comic at times sheds light on a very serious epidemic that is continuously growing within our society, and that is the increased “Cop Killing’s” of unarmed citizens. This parody poked fun at the statistics surrounding this dilemma. I found the video funny at times, but in the back of my mind I kept wondering if they were going to address issues that have been highlighted most recently in the news relating to the killing of innocent individuals such as Tamir Rice, Treyvon Martin and many others. During the interview with David Klinger, he was able to rattle off the stats of bicycles being stolen, home burglaries and the inventories of bullets but not able to articulate the statistics of the number of bullets shot as well as the number of actual police shootings.

Although some people may challenge that diversifying police officers will not make a difference in the relationship with communities, police departments mirroring the diversity of communities may mend tension. Notably, the lack of minorities in law enforcement derives from distrust between minorities in communities and law enforcement. In detail, with more policing predicaments emerging, such as police brutality over the recent years, minorities have been more hesitant to join police force due to their
