Students who lie and break the honor code at school can then be effected outside of school (McCabe, Donald, and Gary Pavela.). When someone lies in school, it gets them into the habit of lying and cheating, it then becomes something natural to them. Academic honor codes should be reinforced, and created by multiple groups of people to avoid a bias outlook; upholding honor codes properly allows a student to feel comfortable in his/her environment, it allows proper punishment for the offense at hand, and cuts down on cheating by an extraordinary amount. The percentage of students who believe the honor code is enforced fairly is 48% (Sledge, Sally, and Pam Pringle). Some people may find (like talked about earlier) that the “one size fits all” mentality is unfair. There are also other students who would believe that some people are not being caught for something they should be. The student council of schools take extra initiative when it comes to the honor codes (Broussard, Adam and Brad Golson). When a student is on the student council they represent the students themselves they speak for the students) so when student council's like the one at the “Catholic high school” pursue the creation of honor codes, that is an obvious want for honor codes by the students. Some schools that are very strict about their honor codes have students that feel bad for cheating, instead of the normal “if they can cheat, why can’t I?” sense of thinking (McCabe, Donald, and Gary Pavela.). Students in these schools have developed a sense of respect for one another and feel they would be shamed by many people if they were caught cheating.
